For Those Who Think Suicide Is Their Answer, Listen To Me

Giving up is not a symbol of being weak, at times it can show that you are smart enough to have the courage to move on.

You may think this is the solution to all of your problems but it is not. It is anything but the answer to what you are feeling. Taking your life will affect every single person you have ever had contact with. It will affect this world that you were meant to be apart of and change.

Your mom will never feel alive again. Waking up every morning is impossible, who will she wake up and make breakfast for? Every breath will feel like a stab to her heart, knowing that the most precious thing in her life is gone. A piece of her soul forever lost. You were her world and now it is in shreds. All she wants is you in her arms, to tell you everything is going to be okay.

Your dad can't bear coming home from work anymore because your face isn't lingering around the house to welcome him. Your favorite shoes that always lied by the door will force the air out of his lungs because he can't tell you to put them away anymore. His life is filled with darkness and anger. You were absolutely everything to him.

Your grandmother sobs hysterically every night clutching the picture you made her when you were nine. Wishing that you could come back and everything she would do to just have one more moment with you.

Your brother can't even look at himself in the mirror because his eyes reflect all of the pain and hurt. The disappointment within himself is engraved within his bones, why didn't he pay attention more? Why didn't he have your back when you needed him most? His grades are plummeting because what's the point? You aren't there to cheer him on and help him like you always did before.

The neighbor that always waved to you whenever they saw you in the early hours of the morning on your way to school, will wonder if he should have stopped by the house that morning when you weren't there. Maybe he could have stopped you or changed your mind.

Your best friend spends hours scrolling through the photos and videos of the both of you with tears streaming down her face. From laughing your asses off when you pranked your parents to all of the spontaneous midnight trips to talk about life. When anyone mentions your name, her throat tightens up and her heart falls to her stomach. Why didn't you tell her that you were suffering? You told each other everything.

There is one death by suicide in the world every 40 seconds.

Isn't that crazy? To think that simply posting a picture to your Snapchat story or tying your shoes, could equate to the amount of time it takes for a person to take their life in this world?

There is a negative connotation that follows suicide and it needs to stop. Instead of making people feel shameful about suicide, embrace them. Make them feel heard and listened to, justbe there for them. Get them the help they need whether it's taking them to a medical facility, calling the suicide hotline, or telling the people they love about what's going on. But amongst all, never give up on them. Suicide is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of someone who needs help.

For anyone out there who has had these thoughts, you are loved by so many. You may not think that, but it is the entire truth. You are someone's world. You are amazing. You are intelligent. You are important. You are not alone. You need to stay here, we can figure it out together. Reach out to the people around you and if you can't do that, please call the suicide hotline, 1-800-273-8255. Don't give up, you have people to meet and moments to live.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
