Dear First Semester,

You came and now you’re gone. Being the official start of college, it was definitely an adjustment -- to say the least, but an important milestone. Now, don’t expect me to say it was too easy, but you were definitely manageable. You had me stressed at times and don’t forget frustrated, but overall we had a good time. I saw a friendly face or two that I already knew and was able to meet new ones thanks to you. Getting involved in other activities and programs helped as well. Classes for the most part were pretty good despite some unfortunate mishaps. You definitely taught me a lot, not only academically but as a person as well. Oddly enough, I learned how to solve a Rubik’s cube, which could be considered a highlight even if it was for a class.

As students tend to do, sleep unfortunately got the brute of the bunch, but the good grades soften the blow, I guess. It’s something to be worked on. It’s a good thing that it didn’t hinder me too much. But even only on three hours of sleep, you gave me plenty to do. This break will definitely catch me up on the much needed sleep. Finals week was something of itself, but I pulled through. Already having some of my final grades, I am pretty pleased. The hours of studying and pouring over my notes were worth it.

Our time has come to a close as winter break is here, and I have to admit these next few weeks of being stress free are gladly welcomed. Although I wanted to pull my hair out at times, you were a good experience. Hopefully, next semester brings just as much, or perhaps better. You let me get my feet wet into the college scene; now is the time to get a bit of a balance shift by getting more social. Classes, of course, will still be the priority but to have fun from time to time can make it that much awesome.

I could not have asked for a different experience.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
