A Letter To My Best Friend's Roommate

It is bittersweet to say that my hardest good bye, will be your easiest hello.

A Letter To My Best Friend's Roommate
Jo Ann Rosa

I’m sure you have heard all of the dorm horror stories. Ones about crazy roommates, stuff missing, passive aggressive feelings and completely different sleep cycles. But you lucked out. My best friend will be yours before you know it and although I hate sharing, I am OK with it.

She is possibly the nicest person I know and I’m sure that you two will get along just fine! As long as you love extremely caring, friendly, loyal and genuine people then you are set because this girl is all of the above. When you need some help don’t be shy to ask, she’d be happy to lend a hand to anyone who needs it. If you forgot your laundry in the dryer and took off for class, she’ll happily go get it for you and maybe even fold it too. Not because she feels obligated but because she feels as though it is the right thing to do. She will proofread that essay you are unsure of and make sure you know all your vocab even if it means her staying up later than she planned. Your success will be just as important to her as it is to you. There is no denying her heart is made of gold.

If it’s Friday night and you want to go have fun, she is always up for an adventure. She’ll let you borrow her favorite shirt even if she planned on wearing it. Putting other’s happiness before her own is something she is always doing without even really noticing it. If it’s Sunday night and you want to pig out while watching chick flicks till 4 a.m., she will have a hard time deciding whether to watch "Titanic" or "Dear John" first. That’s my best friend for you, she is all that and usually shares her bag of chips.

I am not saying she is perfect because we all have our flaws but those flaws are so minor and you may have the same ones too. She does get cranky if she doesn’t have her coffee or enough sleep. Sometimes she listens to music that no one quite understands and watches Netflix all day and all night. She will cry because she misses her cat and because the Bachelorette sent home her favorite contestant.

Take good care of her for me. Remind her that a bad test grade isn’t the end of the world and that that boy in her Biology class is not “the one” as much as she wants him to be. Although I am a phone call away, I am also hours away and she may forget that I’m so easy to reach. Be her shoulder to cry on, offer her an ear when she needs to vent. Encourage her to study for five more minutes and to take a few moments for herself every now and then. I can guarantee she will do the same for you.

Like I said, you got lucky. My best friend will be yours too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
