A Letter To My Amazing Grandparents
Rachel Petrella

To my incredible, kind, strong grandparents,

As I grow into a seemingly more mature adult, I have come to realize that your presence in my life is nothing less than one of the most amazing blessings I could ever ask for. I, like many others, forget to call as often as I should, or don’t visit enough as I should. Please know that although I may be hours away at school, I think about all of you quite often. I consider myself blessed that I have had so much time on Earth with all of you. Many of my friends are not as lucky, therefore I thank God every day for you.

Thinking about my life in general, I realize how much your generosity and caring has impacted my life. From the substantial birthday gifts, to helping me invest in my future, you have been nothing but helpful and encouraging while I plan my future. The way you tend to question when I come home from school shows your concern for me as I continue with difficult classes and increased workload, and although sometimes the questions are overwhelming, I appreciate your interest in my studies. Somehow, whenever we visit, we end up talking about your adventures as children. I feel like I’ve heard all the stories in the book, the love stories, the stories where you got in major trouble, your parenting stories, and the stories of your day-to-day adventures with your siblings growing up. They really are a wonderful source of entertainment.

As we all get older and my brothers, cousins, and I grow up and start lives of our own and we may not see you as often, the happiness that you always bring us will not diminish. You tend to be the life of the party and the source of many laughs. Somehow I was lucky enough to have all jokesters as grandparents who keep us all on our toes. I was also given some of the most stubborn (in a good way) grandparents, but maybe that just comes with age (that’s a joke too). All of you are incredibly strong, from overcoming physical setbacks and just the struggles of life in general. You all are some of my amazing role models because of your tendencies to help others, praise God, and love those who surround you in life. I know it is pretty cliché, but I feel so blessed that I have been given a life with you four in it. We may be miles apart, but the special grandparent-grandchild love does not diminish. I look forward to every visit because they fill my heart with happiness that is undeniable. Thank you so much for your love since I was born.

Love,

Your grateful granddaughter

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
