A Letter to Food in College

When you miss Mom's cooking more than ever.

There are many different types of food that you encounter in college. There’s snack foods for the dorm rooms, free food at social events on campus, takeout food, the occasional meal brought back from home, and of course, the dining hall food.

Let’s start with the dining hall food. I encounter you the most out of all the forms of meals in college, but only because I have to. Sometimes, I am a little skeptical as to what even goes into what I am eating here, but hey, a girl’s gotta eat, and the dining hall is the most convenient option on a daily basis. I really have learned to appreciate a simple PB&J sandwich or bowl of cereal when the options are far and few. When there is actually a delicious meal option served in the dining hall, it makes me appreciate it all the more. Nevertheless, I definitely cannot say that I miss you when I go home for breaks.

Popcorn, granola bars, Pop Tarts – I would like to specially thank you for being there for me when I need you. You have helped me through many late night snack cravings, and I am extremely grateful for that. You have also been there for me when I need to grab something quickly before night class or after practice. This goes the same for takeout food. Sometimes, you just need some pizza at 11:00 at night (special shout-out to Domino’s for offering delivery to the dorm that late). I think I appreciate takeout food much more since starting college.

I never realized how much I would miss home-cooked meals when I left for college too. Spaghetti and meatballs, burgers on the grill, homemade soups – I would eat almost anything that my Mom or Dad would make for me right now. I’m sorry that I am not there for you very often, home-cooked meals, but please know that I love you very much.

Thank you to all the different types of food that have helped me through my time at college so far.

Love,

A Hungry College Student

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
