A Letter To Second Semester Seniors

A few things I wish I knew then.

A Letter To Second Semester Seniors
Amelia Matzke

Dear Second Semester Seniors,

With admissions season in full swing, it’s hard not to think back to just a year ago when I was a senior in high school, not a clue in the world of where I would be attending college. When I’d finally heard back from UW-Madison, I knew there was no question of where I wanted to go. With Madison in mind, that’s all I could think about.

Second semester of my senior year was filled with the constant “where are you going to college?”, finding a roommate, and spending too many hours on Pinterest for dorm room decorations. Looking back, my second semester was more about college than it was high school.

Don’t get me wrong, first semester of college was everything I dreamed it to be. I met some of my best friends, loved my classes, and made memories that will last a lifetime. But as I’m sitting here seeing others being admitted to college, all I want to say is “enjoy every moment.”

Enjoy every moment you have left of high school. I know, it sounds cliche and corny, but it’s completely true.

Before you know it you’ll blink and high school will be over. While right now that may seem like all you want, when it’s over you’ll be asking yourself where the time went. Like everything else in life, high school isn't all that you make it out to be. With only one semester left, make it count. Don’t get too stressed out about your upcoming test. Get involved. Do something. Talk to people you may not be friends with or you may not see after high school. Go to prom just because you can. It’s one night of your life, it won’t kill you to go. Also, you probably won’t be doing anything better on your Saturday night if we’re being honest. Actually go to sporting events, and cheer! Don’t feel like you need to party to be cool. You’ve got your whole life for that, and you don’t need alcohol to have fun.

Put yourself out there and leave with no regrets.

On the Upper East Side, Blair Waldorf is an icon. She's what every girl aspires to be. She's beautiful, confident, and can handle any obstacle that life throws at her. Sure, she may just be a television character. But for me, she's a role model and theres a lot that can be learned from Queen B.

“I just want you to know that you’re very special… and the only reason I’m telling you is that I don’t know if anyone else ever has.”

As frustrating and annoying as it can be, being a girl is really awesome. We are beautiful inside and out. Not a lot of people may see that, but girls have a ton of amazing qualities.

We have unique flirting skills.

Us girls have a significant way to flirt with other people. Even when we say the most random or awkward things, we have a way of making everything sound cute and planned. It’s just a gift; we’re good like that.

We Heart It

Over the past decade, television has undergone a very crucial transition: the incorporation of female lead characters. Since it's a known fact that girls actually do run the world (Beyonce said so herself), it's time for the leading ladies of the small screen to get some credit. Without these characters, women would still be sitting in the background of our favorite shows. These women are not only trailblazers for female empowerment, but role models for women worldwide. With that, here are 15 of the smartest, sassiest ladies gracing our screens that remind us that women do, indeed, rule:
