An Open Letter To My Parents

I am who I am because of you.

An Open Letter To My Parents
Nicole Giordano

We all understand how parents nag us, tease us and boss us around. They get under our skin and drive us absolutely crazy sometimes. But we have to thank them. Because even on the days that their rules and nagging bother us the most, they are still the only people in this world who would do anything for us. I am here to say thank you.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for raising me the way you did.

From the second I was born, I was your number one priority. You spent every single day teaching me how to grow, how to be a good person and how to carry myself. I am the person I am today because that is who you taught me to be.

Thank you for the sacrifices you make.

You would give me the shirt off your back to keep me warm. Every need and every want I could ever have is always put before your own. You miss out on social events, personal gifts and even new shoes because paying for what your family needs is more important. And you have never held it against anyone because, to you, our happiness is worth so much more than anything else.

Thank you for being my best friends.

Friends will always come and go, but in the end, it is your family that will always be there. And I was lucky enough to have two parents who were more than just caretakers. You are the people I call to ask for advice, the people who let me cry on their shoulders and the people who support me no matter what the decision is. I’ll never forget the day that you told me, “Don’t pick the college that you think will save us money; pick the college that makes you feel safe and that you like because you worked hard for it and deserve it." So thank you for always having my back when everyone else would let me fall.

Thank you for showing me that there is a love that can conquer all.

All couples argue; it’s no different with the both of you. You can fight and yell, but at the end of the day you make it through. Just the other day we went to lunch and you two couldn’t stop laughing. The smiles and the laughter you shared that day and every day before and after that — I will remember because, through everything, you both show me that sincere love exists. A love that shows me and everyone else around that we shouldn’t settle for anyone who doesn’t care the way you two do.

And lastly, please know that all the incredible things you do never go unnoticed. I will always remember the projects we spent hours doing. I’ll always remember the first time you took me to Disneyland. I will always remember the cheers you both made at my high school graduation. I will always remember the day you moved me into my first college dorm.

I will always remember these things because, without you two, I wouldn’t be where I am now, nor would I be able to do the great things that are in store for me. I am both grateful and happy that, with every accomplishment, I get to make you that much prouder. Thank you for everything.

Love Always,

Me

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
