To My Little Brother Before His Freshman Year

Dear Little Brother,

I can't believe it's already happening – you're going to college. I knew it was coming, but it's hard to look at you and not see the little boy you used to be, the one that was full of energy and always running around with friends. I still remember how excited I was when you were born. You were like a best friend made especially for me. I'm so happy that we've stayed friends all these years, despite uncountable fights and arguments.

I know you're excited to start your first year, and I'm excited for you; you're going to do amazing things and make all of us proud. Moving away from home and out of state is scary and thrilling and I'm so happy you get to experience it. It will teach you independence and force you to cook your own meals and keep your space clean. Having gone through this myself, I know how hard it can be but there's no better way to learn. But Mom and Dad are always only a phone call away, just like they have been for me. And, of course, I'll always be there if you need me, too.

Even if you don't need anything, call Mom and Dad. They're going to miss you more than you know. You're bigger than both of them now, but you're forever their little boy; they've seen you nearly everyday for 18 years and having you so far away is going to be a hard change for them. Make it a habit to call them when you're walking to or from class, or when you take a break from studying. They'll be grateful for it and you'll be happy you did.

Speaking of studying, make sure you remember that's what you're there for. You're going to have to put in some work, but it will be worth it. There are so many important and interesting things you're going to learn – pay attention to them and explore new subjects. You might discover a totally new interest and you want to keep an open mind.

I know you're going to college for an education, but it's just as important to have fun. This is an exciting new adventure, one you should enjoy to the fullest. Go exploring, meet new people, make new friends. Don't be afraid to try new things, just make sure you're being smart and safe.

You have a good head on your shoulders and a good heart; you're one of the best people I know and I'm so proud to call you my brother. You're going to have an amazing time at college and I know you'll do great. Don't forget to call, OK?

Love,

Your Big Sister

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
