A Letter To My Freshman-Year Roommate

You've definitely heard those awful stories about freshman-year roommates. I mean, living with a complete stranger who you were randomly paired up with after a few survey questions in a 12 x 15 room doesn't sound like an ideal situation, right? Sometimes people end up with a roommate who is the complete opposite of them--a huge partier, a book worm, an introvert, a slob, an early bird, the list could go on forever. These types of roommates usually don't speak much and only share a few words per day. Still, believe it or not, other people get lucky and end up with the perfect roommate. I was fortunate enough to get the latter.

If you are lucky enough to be paired with someone who turned out to be one of your best friends, then you have many things to thank them for. After all, it's almost Thanksgiving!

Dear Freshman Roomie,

Thank you for always waking me up in the morning and being my alarm clock. I probably would have slept through many 8 a.m. classes if it wasn't for you.

Thank you for keeping your side of the room clean. You know that I'm OCD and I know that it annoyed you at first, but I'm grateful that you accepted my neat freak side.

Thank you for always being my shoulder to cry on. I could always count on you to be there for me to vent to about absolutely nothing or absolutely everything.

Thank you for not caring when I came home at 3 a.m. when you had a game the next morning.

Thank you for always being my dining hall buddy even though I ate hourly.

Thank you for being my college mom and giving me wise advice (aka, telling me not to go out to a party when I had a paper due the next morning).

Thank you for not disturbing me through my random naps at 1 in the afternoon.

Thank you for always letting me have my friends over and making them feel like they were your friends too.

Thank you for helping me pick out every outfit that I ever wore.

Thank you for forcing me to do my laundry after two weeks.

Thank you for accepting me and all my weird qualities. I know that you loved our Broadway sing-a-longs.

I have a million things that I could thank you for, but most importantly thank youfor being the most amazing freshman-year roommate that a girl could ask for. I truly don't know how I would have survived freshman year without you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
