To My Best Friend, From Miles Away

Distance only makes my heart grow fonder.

To My Best Friend, From Miles Away
Jonathan Cukla

Hey best friend,

There is no other way to start this off than by saying I miss you. Who would've thought that we'd ever have to go more than a couple days without seeing each other? What a stupid concept.

It's funny how coming together is literally a sigh of relief from real life. I think that's the true testament of a friendship: being able to completely forget the rest of the world and just enjoy the time we have together while we have it. That's absolutely the number one thing I miss about being close to you. I miss being able to sit down and talk. . . and talk. . . and talk until we realize that the sun is nearly up before we finally decide to sleep. I miss our deep conversations, where we discuss the issues that lie on our hearts. I miss planning out our futures, even though neither of us knows what's going to happen two days from now. You bring peace to my life and remind me how many incredible possibilities lie ahead, despite the setbacks. I miss you for that.

When I think of our friendship, adventure is the only word I can think of to describe it. Regardless of the ways we spend our time together, everything feels adventurous. From simply talking and driving around town late at night, to all of our concerts that we've experienced together, every second is time well spent. Hell, we've even traveled across the country together. Just thinking of all of the places we've been and the things we've seen, I'm incredibly happy that I've gotten to create so many incredibly memories with you. And I look forward to all that await us in the future.

By the way, in case you didn't know, I'm thankful for you. I'm thankful for the fact that you know me better than anybody, still to this day and still from miles away. Through all these years, you've been there to pick me up from the ground, dirty and bruised. Let's not even try to count the number of tears you've wiped from my eyes. Nobody can hold a torch to the role you've played in keeping my head above the water in all the oceans I've tread. I aspire to be as caring as you, and I hope I've at least gotten a start on that over the years.

Hey best friend, let's remember to never give up on our dreams, okay? You know mine, and I know yours. I'll hold you accountable if you do the same for me. Even from afar, I'll continue to encourage you to follow your heart and your passions. I'll remind you of the world of opportunities that lies out there, waiting for us to come take advantage. But only if you do the same for me. There's a lot of exploring left for us to do. Countless adventures are on the horizon, and I'm going to need my partner in crime to join me on those.

You're miles away from me right now, but that'll never stop me from finding my way back to you, from finding my way back home. I love you so much.

P.S. I can't wait for our next adventure.

Love,

Your Best Friend

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
