To the ignorantwriter of this article: please get off of your high horse and join the rest of us on the ground. There are so many aspects of your article that I disagree with, but I'm going to just name the biggies for the sake of my time and sanity.
1. Please stop with the condescending tone.
"But...Corri! You also sounded condescending in the intro...that's hypocritical!" No...that's intentional. It sucks to be treated like a child when reading something; not only is it just going to blatantly offend readers just for the sake of being offensive, but it also automatically stops and discourages any conversation. It leaves no room for discussion! Stating an opinion with such a sense of righteousness is the best way to get people to ignore you, and the worst way to inspire a change of view.
2. Why are you trying to apply logic to an emotional response?
Okay, I understand how silly it seems to want to escape reality by running away to our iPod and headphones; however, I think you're missing the big picture here. Many people, even kids, in this situation don't want to run away from reality or our problems or anything. Just like you stated, even you like to "take time for yourself, in solitude, and maybe even to ignore the problems in your life for a little bit (just a little bit)." Is it so wrong for someone to do that same thing in a different way than you? No. Also, who made you the Queen of How to Deal with Personal Issues?
3. Stop reading into things...especially Tumblr quotes.
"Headphones on, world off" can mean many, many things...so why are you so sure you know what the author meant? This reminds me of those AP English teachers that try to convince you that the author made the curtains blue because he/she was depressed. The author may have been as such... but also could have just really liked blue! This author could have just wanted to escape the noisy town he/she lives in, or his/her's parents fighting loudly in the hallway. Maybe the author just wanted to get lost in the music, to know that someone out there is also feeling something similar. Perhaps he/she simply wants to take a break, have some time to him/herself because of some personal struggles. Who knows? You know what they say about assumptions...
Rant over. I feel sick even writing this damn thing, but sometimes...just sometimes, the snark needs to be written out. I cannot believe I am getting so worked up over some rando's opinion about a Tumblr quote, but there you have it. I am human, you are human, and the author of the quote is human. Let's embrace our flaws and move on.
