As I start to wrap up my freshman year in college, I've been getting nostalgic pretty much all of the time. I have met the most amazing people, I get to study in the beautiful city of Chicago and I can't even fathom how life could get any better than this.
A lot of people define success as how much money they make or in a materialistic sense, but I think success can be measured in happiness most of all. I have reached a wonderful chapter in my life, and it's only just the beginning, but I want to say thank you to the people and places that brought me where I am today. One place, in particular, deserves special appreciation: my high school.
I know high school isn't a well-loved place for most people; in fact, it's almost hated. I got lucky -- I got to go to this incredible and artistic environment that was somehow also school.
In 2012, I received a letter that I was accepted into the Production and Design conservatory at the Orange County School of Arts (OCSA). I went to school from 8:05 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. every week. I had academic classes in the morning and my concentrated technical theatre classes in the afternoon. Not to mention, rehearsals at night, where I'd often be. I was usually at OCSA more than I was at home, but home slowly shifted as a universal term between the two.
OCSA isn't just a place, it's a community brought together by acceptance, art and probably the best people you'll ever meet. Sure, everything wasn't always sunshine and rainbows, but looking back, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
OCSA taught me so much, and I have held on to those lessons throughout my freshman year in college.
So, OCSA:
Thank you for teaching me that empathy is not simply tolerance.
Thank you for teaching me the importance of timeliness. "Early is on time, on time is late."
Thank you for teaching me that I have a voice, even if I wasn't always in the spotlight.
Thank you for teaching me to be a leader by serving others.
Thank you for teaching me that while other people try to make things black and white in a gray world, we have the opportunity to make life colorful.
With love,
