Let's Talk About James Franco

We don't get to pick and choose who the villain's are when it comes to sexual harassment.

Let's Talk About James Franco
Vanity Fair

I love James Franco.

I went to see his movie The Disaster Artist a few weeks ago and it's might be my favorite movie of all time. I got sick two days later and spent my time in bed watching interviews of him and his 90's tv show Freaks and Geeks. He's quirky and interesting and really freaking cute.

And then he was accused of sexual assault.

I was watching the Golden Globes and got so excited when they announced Franco had won the award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Drama. He went on stage and accepted his award wearing a "Times Up" pin in support of the movement to end sexual harassment and assault. Wow, I thought. He's adorable AND an activist. Ten minutes later I saw he was being accused of sexually assaulting women on Twitter.

Franco essentially denied any and all allegation against him the next day. Since the Golden Globes, 5 more women have come forward saying that they experienced James Franco acting inappropriately. None have accused him of rape but they have accused him of sexual exploitation and harassment. I'm not here to talk about whether or not James Franco is guilty, I'm here to talk about the way I reacted.

When I heard about Harvey Weinstein I was disgusted. When I heard about Bill Cosby I was disgusted. When I heard about Kevin Spacey I was disgusted.

When I heard about James Franco I was skeptical and for all the wrong reasons.

It was easy for me to believe that these men had done every single thing that men and women were accusing them of. Harvey Weinstein is gross looking. Bill Cosby is old. I didn't even know who Kevin Spacey was. But James Franco has been a heartthrob since he was in his 20's. He's in some of the funniest movies I've seen and after binging his interviews, I found him to be quite charming.

"Maybe they just want attention... He just won a Golden Globe and they're looking for a chance to have their name in the headlines".

The more I thought about it the more I began to wonder, why didn't I believe these women? Was it just because James Franco is hot? Could I not believe that anyone wouldn't want to be around him? Men who sexually assault women or other men are monsters. I couldn't believe that my new favorite actor was a monster.

The point I'm getting at has less to do with James Franco and more to do with my outlook as a whole. You can be a fan of someone who does bad things. If you want to pick and choose what you believe then the choice is yours. But hot, young, talented actors are just as capable or assault and harassment as old, fat, creepy producers. As a young woman, I had no right to judge the women coming forward and I failed to see that a pretty face doesn't necessarily mean you're a good person.

My point is, it's easy to idolize someone. Young girls are constantly looking to these young stars as untouchable and incapable of wrongdoing. These young men (and women) are humans. They make mistakes, they do bad things, and they need to be held accountable.

I have no way of knowing who is telling the truth in the "James Franco situation", but if I were one of these women, I would want to be believed. If the allegations are untrue, I hope that James Franco is welcomed back to Hollywood with open arms. However, if these women are telling the truth then Franco needs to be treated the same way Weinstein and Spacey have been.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
