Let me tell you all a little story...
Just the other day three college students were sitting at an airport gate, awaiting their return flight home for the summer. Minding their own business, they were conversing amongst themselves. In the midst of casual conversation, laughs, and friendly banter, a middle-aged man decided to chime in. He managed to take a joking remark between the friends completely out of context. The man, who they had never met, began making patronizing remarks. What were these remarks? That obviously we were three college students who encapsulated "typical millennials." He began to say that we embodied the generation who is entitled to whatever they want and only seem to complain about their situation in this world. After receiving support from a fellow middle-ager next to him, who applauded his uncalled-for statements, the man picked up his belongings and boarded the flight ("Business Select," of course).
So, Mr. Business Select, let me take the time to clarify your understanding about "The Millennial Generation." First of all, I apologize on behalf of the millennial who made you adopt this incorrect bias and whatever actions of theirs served as your basis for deriving this conclusion. Now, let me introduce you to the true millennial generation.
We are known as the millennials, as we have grown up at the turn of the century and millennium.
We are not less than.
We are the byproducts of your generation (so if you do see something wrong with us, you might want to also take that up with your generation).
We are not some new breed of young adults. What actions you might shake your head at are just as much the same actions as when you were our age.
We are growing up in a world that is much more advanced and accessible, due to technology and improvements that this brilliant world should be proud of. I'd like to point out, so are you. We may have had more ease than other generations due to this, but so have you, regardless of your current age.
We are not the stereotype yourself and your colleagues have come to adopt. Millennials live in a world where, because of all of the resources we have grown up with, you must prove yourself to be better, stronger, more skilled, more intelligent, and more driven than anyone around you, if you want to succeed. You might never understand the expectations and competition our generation faces. We step out into the world, where competition is at an all-time high, needing to impress the people who have already formed expectations of who we are, and better yet, who we should be.
Who are we? We are people just like everyone else, of any other generation. We have dreams, hope, desires, backgrounds, cultures, family, and downfalls ... just. like. you. To be honest, we're all a little selfish in this world and entitled at times. It's human nature (not millennial nature). It's true of all generations, just in different contexts.
Sincerely,
Every Millennial Out There
P.S. And might I add, Mr. Business Select, let's not forget who will be taking care of your generation in the future...
