As each year comes to a close, it’s hard not to find myself looking back at the way it began, versus how it ended.
For the past few years, January 1st has begun with the traditional family hike in below 20-degree weather and feeling excited with what is to come in the year ahead, while December 31st leaves me sentimental with mixed feelings about leaving the past behind and starting fresh.
More than ever, the end of the year leaves me questioning how I’ve grown and developed into the person I currently am, and thinking of the lessons and advice I’ve learned, which I’ll carry with me in years to come.
2017 has served as a major period for discovery, for I’ve been able to take away many realizations that have been able to benefit me as the days go by, which may help others as well.
1. Communication opens doors but also closes them.
Expressing any unsaid feelings or concerns towards another person allows a weight to be lifted. Whether the person responds to your words with positivity and reassurance or leaves you hanging by a thread of uncertainty, communicating what you feel is a huge refresher.
In the end, if you’re able to come to some kind of understanding, even better! From this, I’ve been able to see who is meant to be a part of my life for a greater amount of time, and those who are only meant to stick around for a minute.
2. Breaking out of your shell is beneficial.
Even if it’s only slightly (and with minor awkwardness), the results that come from it can be life-changing. Put yourself out there; express yourself.
Don’t be afraid of what could go wrong, but rather be open to any positive outcomes that may float your way.
3. Don’t force what isn’t meant to be.
Not everything stays the same forever. Let life guide you along and show what it has in store for you. Take your time, and enjoy the ride.
Appreciate and treasure what does stay, but don’t be reluctant to let go. Be open to those new experiences and opportunities that come your way!
4. Goodbyes suck.
Going to college and leaving behind what has been so familiar to me throughout my whole life was one of, if not the toughest goodbyes I’ve had to endure. Though once I was settled, and getting back into the flow of school, everything seemed to fall into place.
It’s hard to say goodbye to any people or places that matter most to you, no matter the circumstances. You’ll always know how to keep these memories close to your heart.
5. Expect the unexpected.
You may never know who will come into your life at any given moment. A thrilling, yet also torturous thought. Get ready for wherever life takes you next!
