It's easy for me to imagine what type of mother I want to be. You know the one: the mom who has a freshly baked plate of cookies ready for her kids after a long day and who sticks heart-shaped notes in their homemade lunches.
But, the truth is, I have no idea what kind of mom I'm going to be. It's impossible for me to realistically put myself in that situation right now. What I am certain about is that I'm going to try my very hardest to help my children be the best versions of themselves.
Here are 15 things I'm going to teach my children, as told by Kid President.
1. "Remember to be kind."
Every single person on this planet is dealing with something difficult, even if it doesn't seem like it. Be kind, always.
2. "You have to work hard if you want to succeed."
It's so easy to give up on things, but nothing worth achieving will come easy. A good work ethic will take you far in life.
3. "Treat others how you want to be treated."
My mom told me this until she was blue in the face. It is still just as meaningful now as it was 20 years ago.
4. "You grow through what you go through."
I repeat this to myself when I'm struggling. It's like Kelly Clarkson said, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
5. "You matter."
Self-love is something that I am going to teach my children from the very beginning. I never want them to doubt that they are loved.
6. "Why put off to tomorrow what you could do today?"
Procrastination is never the answer.
7. "Chase your happiness."
Happiness looks different for everyone. It might not be a four-year degree or a white house with a picket fence. Ultimately, I want my children to do whatever makes them happy.
8. "Smile. At everyone. All the time."
This is something I've had to teach myself and practice, but being friendly is a quality that everyone appreciates.
9. "The world needs more of you."
So many people struggle with the way that they look or how much they weigh. But telling yourself that you are more than your exterior helps to combat such bad body-image days.
10. "People will never forget how you made them feel."
This goes hand-in-hand with kindness. I don't want anyone to have a bad impression of me, so I make an effort to treat everyone with respect.
11. "Being sensitive is a gift."
Crying is not a weakness, it's a strength. Being in touch with your emotions is a trait that will allow you to feel at peace with yourself.
12. "You have to take care of yourself, mentally and physically."
I'm still working on this one, but it's proving to be so accurate. You need to take care of your body, inside and out, to be the best version of yourself.
13. "Everything happens for a reason."
I know this one is cliché. But once you believe it, life becomes a whole lot easier. Don't worry, have faith.
14. "It will all work out."
In moments of doubt, I whisper this to myself. Because yes, in the end, it will always be okay.
15. "Life is so good."
Gratitude is something that comes naturally to me and I think the world would be a much better place if we were all more appreciative of the wonderful things we take for granted.
I know that I, for one, don't take Kid President for granted. This kid is wise beyond his years and I hope to raise a child just like him someday.
