Lessons From Working Customer Service
Fight For Florida

Everyone should at least work a customer service type of job at least once in their life. At least for a decent chunk of time. It doesn't matter how long, but to get the gist of what these people have to deal with. It could be doing retail, fast food or as a restaurant employee, sales, or any other type of customer service. This work is exhausting but completely necessary and in high demand so if everyone had a chance to step in to the shoes of a waitress or a retail sales person, they may appreciate the hard work they do. Here are some reasons why they deserve the credit.

Growing up with a family owned business, I've always appreciated customer service I feel more than the average, but you have a completely different level of respect for this type of work no matter how much you appreciate their hard work, you don't realize how hard it really is until you're in their shoes for real.

Here are some lessons you can learn from working customer service.

1. Their job is literally to make you happy.

They bend over backwards for you and work so hard behind the scenes to make all your wants and wishes available to you within their means and power. Learning to think of others and their needs is a powerful lesson.

2. They put up with so much ridiculous-ness.

You have no idea what some people put up with from things going wrong left and right and/or unknown obstacles popping up out of nowhere. Learning to multitask and deal with the hurdles as they come to you can help you in more ways than one down the road.

3. They work as a team.

All their coworkers help each other as much as possible. Many go out of their way to bus others' tables, run others' food, seat and help guests who may not even be their own. They help cover shifts and time off so their coworkers can enjoy time off. Learning to be a team player is a valuable skill to have especially when it comes to long-term employment regardless of the field, whether it's customer service or not.

4. They do more than you think.

Not only do they make you feel welcome and honor you by making sure the customer always leaves smiling, they also must know the technological procedures, money handling, codes, deal with multiples events at once, etc. It's not just leading you to a table with a smile, it is way more than that.

5. Valuable skills earned.

Working in this field makes you better at communication, better at organization and planning, better at balance and coordination, better at people skills and being friendly - the list goes on and on. It is simply just a different kind of environment.

6. They go above and beyond.

Your server could take on multiple tables at once while on a busy dinner shift while working a double, hasn't had their break yet or eaten anything for lunch or dinner and still manages to slap on a smile and go above and beyond for not only all your needs and wants but for many families and individuals all at once. They put you first above themselves.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
