Lessons Freshman Year Taught Me

College teaches you more than just book smarts.

Lessons Freshman Year Taught Me
  1. Independence is great, but it requires a lot of responsibility.

You're finally out of our parents house so you can come and go as you please, but it also makes you responsible for all your daily choices. You can chose to go out with your friends anytime you would like, but you also need to keep time for homework. It may not be the most fun choice, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

2. Making friends isn't the easiest, but it's worth it.

Leaving home and your friends is hard, and sometimes it's harder to make new friends. The effort is worth it though, even if new friendships aren't immediate, don't stop trying. Even if you don't make friends the first hour of being in college, you'll find the right people at the right time.

3. Your roommates become your family away from home.

Although sometimes people don't get along with their suitemates, sometimes it all works out and you wish you never had to leave them. After class or going out they'll be the ones there to tell stories too, and other times they'll be the ones experiencing everything with you.

4. Leaving home makes you more mature.

In most cases, you don't have a parent standing over you asking if you had any homework to do. Now, it's your responsibility to stay on top of your own stuff. Leaving your parents house makes you have to strap up and grow up.

5. Professors are not the same as your high school teachers.

In high school, your teachers are more likely to remind you of class deadlines and tests. In college classes, some professors will tell you about assignments coming up, but most will assume you read the syllabus and know when everything is due.

6. Home cooked meals taste a lot better when you go home.

Meals your parents cook for you are appreciated at home, but once you get to college, you realize just how great your parents cooking is. The nights spent in the dining hall walking in circles trying to figure out what to eat will make you wish you were at home eating food at home.

7. You must appreciate the family in friends in your life.

Being away from home is fun and all, but it really makes you appreciate your family and friends. They have molded you into the person you are now and prepped you for this stage in your life, don't forget to thank them.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
