In 2018, you'd think people's political stances would be respected and tolerated. However, things ironically seem to never work out that way, and it's always undeniably one-sided. The "right" will never agree with the "left," but the "left" will never respect the "right."
Flashback to Obama's presidency, almost all celebrities and public figures who stood behind him were praised for publically supporting him. They were never scolded nor were they actually truly bashed through media outlets and social media.
Now, flash forward back to 2018 and the society we live in, as it is extremely different than it was during Obama's term when it comes to everyday life, pop culture, violence, and prejudice.
All it took was for one tweet. One tweet, which was followed by a slew of tweets, by Kanye West to shake things up. Unlike country singer, Shania Twain, who rapidly renounced her pro-Trump statement after being mauled by the media— That has not stopped Kanye West.
As anticipated, this brought immediate and direct backlash from his fellow celebrities. Following the segment of tweets, artists including Ariana Grande, BTS, Drake, Harry Styles, Jaden Smith, Janelle Monáe, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Kendrick Lamar, Lana del Rey, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Troye Sivan, and Zayn Malik unfollowed his newly resurrected Twitter account.
Kim Kardashian also went out on a limb to support her husband but accentuated the fact that though she does not necessarily agree with Trump and his policies, believes everyone is entitled to their own opinion, despite popular belief.
This is one of the major things wrong with living in the United States in 2018. The entertainment industry is literally turning against Kanye West for speaking his beliefs out loud on a social platform.
John Legend, a self-proclaimed political science enthusiast, felt the need to personally contact West for these tweets supporting President Donald Trump.
Fellow rappers like Chance the Rapper and Big Sean, have also reached out to West but instead of trying to correct his ways, provided support although likely not agreeing with him.
People should never feel ashamed for their political beliefs. People should never be looked at as narcissistic, violent-driven, racist, incompetent, dumbfounded for having particular Conservative roots.
Perhaps, this is what America needed and who would have ever thought that it would be Kanye West— to be the first to crack the mold of encouraging the fact that many seem to forget, and that it is "OK" to have Conservative beliefs in modern-day society.
Yes, Kanye West is a loose cannon and stays true to the fact no one can misconstrue or guide him for his opinions and antics. Granted, this could have been a brilliant publicity stunt.
Nevertheless, if this results in opening the eyes and minds of a demographic so unbelievably large and unaware of the eminence of conservatism, independent thought, and support for our president, it's a pretty good start.
