Transitioning from living at home under your parent's roof to living on your own can be a tough transition. It can be difficult to learn how to properly take care of yourself when you are thrown into adulthood all of a sudden. It is difficult and takes time to find your independence, but once you do it is an amazing feeling.

While living at home, you do not realize how much your parents take care of you. They buy your groceries, clean up after you, do your laundry, cook for you, etc. Your family does so much for you and you do not even realize it until they are no longer there. A lot of people towards the end of high school just want to get out of their parent's house and live on their own but they do not always realize how difficult it can actually be to become independent, and how much work you have to put into providing for yourself.

Living on your own and taking care of yourself can be difficult. You can forget about the simple things that you need to do to take care of yourself, such as eating. It is very common for college students to forget to feed themselves because of all of the other responsibilities that they have. You have to learn to do everything for yourself, cook, clean and make appointments. All of the little things build up and it is hard to manage when you are thrown into adulthood all of a sudden. Being independent is not something that you can really mentally prepare for. It takes time to learn how to take care of yourself and be responsible. You do not realize how much you have to do for yourself until you are all alone and don't have your parents there to help you or do it for you.

Once you find your independence and get the hang of being on your own and doing things for yourself, it is a beautiful experience. You can do whatever you want when you want. But it also takes responsibility to know what you should and should not do. With finding your independence, you also find yourself becoming more responsible. You are able to find yourself and what you want to do with your life and what you have to offer the world. You start to find your purpose in life and how you can be a positive influence on others.

Going home and being back under your parent's roof and living by their rules even for a short period of time after you become more independent can be a struggle. You now know how to take care of yourself and like to do things without rules and living at home can feel restricting. You feel like you have a curfew, or you feel like your parents are babying you. Once you become independent, you do not want to go back to living with your parents.

Being independent is a beautiful experience. It can be difficult at times but once you find it, you will love it and never want to go back to living under someone else's care.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
