As I look back on my Freshman year of college, I think about how much I've learned about the world. Some of my preconceived notions were proved true. However, I was also proved wrong about more things than I'd like to admit. Here are 21 things I've learned during my Freshman Year:
1. Use the benefits of having a Student ID.
College is expensive. However, there are some very kind retailers out there who understand your financial difficulties! Check out this Odyssey list of all the places you can use your Student ID for discounts!
2. Go to your classes.
Okay, I personally already knew this, but some of my friends learned this the hard way! You're paying for your classes and it's a waste of money if you don't go!
3. Invest in a whiteboard.
I don't know what I would do without my whiteboard! It acts as a calendar, notepad, and academic planner.
4. Buy your books anywhere, but the bookstore.
While the bookstore may be the most convenient avenue to purchase your textbooks, it is not very friendly to your wallet! Buy your books from online retailers such as Chegg!
5. Buy an academic planner and actually write stuff down in it.
Life can get pretty hectic, but having an academic planner can save your grades (and life)!
6. Step outside your comfort zone.
Whether you do this by trying Sushi (I still hate it) or by taking a job where you call alumni for donations (and get yelled at and hung up on), do something you wouldn't normally have done.
7. Time management.
Plan out your days! Figure out how much time you need for school and how much time you'll want to destress.
8. Always do extra credit.
In high school, extra credit may have moved you a few percentage points, but in college extra credit points can drastically improve your grade
9. Get involved.
You'll make way more friends this way than you will sitting in your room. Also a great way to avoid homework!
10. There are no days off.
Classes canceled? Check your email, you definitely still have assignments.
11. Don't throw out your syllabus.
Keeping and reading your syllabi is NECESSARY for success.
12. Not everyone drinks (you don't have to be drunk to have fun)!
I knew before I got to college that I wasn't interested in drinking or partying. There are people on campus who share similar values. There are plenty of activities for you to do that don't involve alcohol.
13. Ratemyprofessors.com will be your best-friend during scheduling.
Our school has its own version of this website and it is so helpful.
14. Go to the gym.
You're paying the membership fee in your tuition and fees. Might as well get some use out of it.
15. Get a study group together.
Friends make studying a lot more fun!
16. I found something I like at Starbucks!
For someone who doesn't like coffee, this is a big deal. I recommend the Strawberry Lemonade Refreshers.
17. No one cares.
No one really cares what you're wearing, they're just trying to stay awake for class
18. Be nice to everyone.
Whether it's fellow students, professors, food-service workers, or someone who just held a door to you, a simple "Thank You" goes a long way.
19. Carry an umbrella.
Even if it's sunny and 75 degrees, rain is always a possibility.
20. Make time for yourself.
If you feel like you need a mental health day, take a mental health day.
21. Don't forget who you are.
It may be extremely cheesy, but stay true to you!
