Fellow freshmen, you have overcome the biggest hurdle that it is in the form of your first semester. Sweat and tears were shed; if you were in a lab, engineering class or simply too clumsy, then blood was also shed. Of course, we learned a lot from this semester. Here are the top 10 things I learned from this semester and hope to use for the next semester.
1. Use the Writing Center!
The Writing Center will help you with your papers and can lead to good success. I personally did not and I now totally regret it.
2. When in doubt, ask help!
Stuck on a particular problem, can't find a thesis, or you're not sure about something. Ask for help, your professor's office hours are there for you to ask them things like these!
3. Routines help!
Routines will help with time organization and you tend to have a weird feeling if you forget something.
4. If a professor is making a class easy, don't mess it up.
If a professor is making study guides like the exam, makes the exams easy, has low expectations and gives you notes. Don't mess up an "Easy A".
5. Find at least 1 person to get decent with!
Always have a person in each class that you're close with, just in case you miss a class and the professor says "ask someone for the notes". It just feels awkward to ask someone you never met for notes.
6. Form study groups!
Some classes are hard and the professor may not teach the material well. By forming study groups you have people to ask for help and figure out things together!
7. Try not to think about dropping out!
We all have those thoughts, don't even think about them because you will only want to do it more and more.
8. Take every opportunity you get!
If you get an opportunity and it is legit TAKE IT! You never know what you can benefit from the opportunity!
9. If your professor puts up powerpoints before class, STUDY THEM!!
This helped me a lot for my German class, it will you understand the course material better.
10. Don't pull a Luke Skywalker, Socialize.
For those who don't know or don't care for Star Wars. Luke Skywalker was being a "hermit" and lived on a planet by himself for a really long time, he never socialized and didn't say anything when Rey first asked for help in her Jedi training. Don't be like Luke Skywalker, just go to 1 or 2 events every 2 weeks and try to make friends
At the end of the day, we did what we did and we all make mistakes. Here's a new semester and a New Year! I hope this helps.
