What I Learned From The Kids I Spent The Summer Babysitting

My summer as a mom.

For my first summer home from college, I, like most other college students, needed to get a job. I knew I did not want to work the same job as last summer, lifeguarding. No thanks. So this summer, I thought the perfect job would be nannying. It would be easy, good pay (in cash), and even fun.

And it was... for the most part. Here are a few things I learned over my summer playing "mom."

I am in no way ready to have kids anytime soon.

If there was only one thing that I learned this summer, it was that I can easily wait 10 more years until I am ready to have nuggets of my own. It was all fun and games for a few hours a day, but full time? Forget about it.

Yes, even a 4-year-old can beat me at Mario Kart.

It's is kind of pathetic at this point. Rainbow Road? Not even a possibility.

I need to thank my parents a little more often.

I am so sorry mom and dad that you had to do this with me for 19 years. I have a newfound appreciation for all that you do. Thank you, guys.

I actually like kids. Sometimes.

I never really thought of myself as a "kid person". I still don't really. But I did learn that sometimes they can be cute as can be and tolerated in small doses.

That I will not be doing it again next summer.

As much fun as it was, it's time for me to get a real internship. I cannot do another whole summer of little munchkins. Sorry, kiddos.

I need more naps than kids do.

Waking up at 6:30 and having full energy all day was apparently a lot easier when I was five. It was a little bit of an adjustment going from three naps a day at school to full on mom mode at the crack of dawn.

Not all kids like mac and cheese.

I know. I thought it was bizarre too. Who can say no to mac and cheese?

I still know how to ride a bike.

It is true when they say you never forget how to ride a bike no matter how long it has been. I don't think I've ridden a bike in about 10 years but don't worry, I still have the skills. Even though I am pretty sure my butt was bruised for days afterward.

Kids have attitude, even towards babysitters.

As a person who thinks everyone is yelling at me when their voice changes in the slightest, I did not handle this the best. I had to remember not everyone talks like a mouse like me.

Kids have short attention spans.

Since I could lie in bed and watch Netfix for about 5 hours without getting bored, I couldn't relate when my kids wanted to do something different every 10 minutes because they were bored from the previous activity already. Coming up with ideas for entertainment was probably the hardest part about the summer.

I am glad to finally be back at school

By the end, I was itching to be done with my babysitting job and get back to Bloomington where I belong. Thanks, summer, it was fun. Kinda.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
