Hi, I'm your typical college girl: I live in hoodies, oversized t-shirts, athletic shorts, flip flops, fuzzy socks, and messy buns. However, that doesn't mean I don't like being fancy every once in a while! What it does mean is that I like to put as little effort into my fanciness as possible. Thus, here are my top 10 lazy girl hacks to looking fancy.
1. Wear close-toed shoes so you don't have to do your toes.
How many times have you been almost ready to go out, you look down, and realize the only toes that are even mildly painted are your big toes-- and even those are mostly chipped off from three weeks ago #guilty. Slip on some close-toed flats or heels and you're good to go!
2. If you must wear heels, bring flats for the long walks.
You spend all day in fuzzy socks or flip-flops. You will die if you try to wear heels all night long. An easy way to combat that is wearing flats for the walk to the car and then changing into heels once you get to your destination.
3. Maxi skirts/dresses = No need for shaved legs!
My gosh, shaving your legs is a HASSLE. Especially in dorm showers where you basically soap up the sides of the stall and spin around because they're so small, you have to do yoga just to reach your ankles! And that little patch by your knees? Forget it! Wearing a maxi dress or skirt will save you shower yoga and potentially nicking yourself before going out.
4. If you have to wear a short dress: PANTYHOSE!
I, for one, used to think that pantyhose were strictly for old women. Now, I know they're for nights you need to wear a short dress, but you haven't shaved your legs and don't have time to do so. Plus they come in different colors, so you can pick whatever goes best with your outfit!
5. Or just wear a dress for minimum outfit effort.
Dresses are great because they're all one piece. You don't have to think about color coordinating tops and bottoms, you just have to pick out a single article of clothing and call it good.
6. Tinted moisturizer is your best friend.
Ain't nobody got time for a full face of makeup! Put on some tinted moisturizer and a little mascara and you instantly look put together! **Bonus points if you add tinted lip balm and look super fancy.
7. Wear something with sleeves/decent straps so you can wear whatever bra your heart desires.
Nobody wants to wear a strapless bra (AKA a wannabe belt). Nobody wants to go out in a sticky bra or (heaven forbid) pasties and taped-down boobs. Wearing a dress or top that has sleeves will allow you to wear your favorite comfy bra and nobody will be the wiser.
8. Braids save lives.
We've all done this: You forget about an occasion too late and have to rush to get ready... Crap! You haven't washed your hair in days! Learn how to do at least one good braid for the instances where wearing your hair down isn't an option. You can watch a basic French braid tutorial here.
9. Dry shampoo. 'Nuff said.
If you really can't braid, and none of your friends can braid either, break out the dry shampoo for when your hair just isn't cooperating. You can buy it, or make a less harmful version with ingredients from your kitchen! Find the recipe here.
10. Own one pair of nice earrings.
Adding earrings to an ensemble can really bring the whole thing together. I never wear earrings in daily life, which makes it really special (and fancy) when I break out a little extra sparkle for my nights out.
