What Happened In Vegas Is Bigger Than Gun Control

This issue stems from a heart problem, not a gun one.

In light of the recent horrific events in Las Vegas, it is easy to immediately blame guns as the sole contributor to this terrorism. The events that transpired at the Route 91 music festival on the Las Vegas strip, were nothing short of a tragedy, but the root of an issue much larger than guns.

Regardless of race, color, religion, or political party affiliation, if you massacre innocent people, by definition you are in fact a terrorist. Still not convinced? The definition of terrorism, as per Nevada state law is, "any act that involves the use or attempted use of sabotage, coercion or violence which is intended to cause great bodily harm or death to the general population."

Even if guns were illegal, and no one on the continent of North America with the exception to law enforcement owned a gun or armed weapon, it would not prevent any terrorist attacks. On July 14, 2016 in Nice, France, a truck driver plowed his vehicle into a crowd of people who were all there to watch the Annual Bastille Day Parade, killing 86 innocent people. Earlier this summer at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, 22 people were killed and 59 were injured by a nail bomb. Weeks later, a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians on the London Bridge, only for the occupants of the van to flee the scene to the nearby Borough Market, and start stabbing people, killing 8 people and injuring 48. Shortly after on June 19, one person was killed and 10 more were injured after a man drove his van into a crowd of people praying outside a mosque in Finsbury Park.

This is an issue much larger than gun control, but an issue of heart. The list of terrorist attacks for 2017 is so long that Wikipedia had to divide it into different pages for each month of the year. Regardless of weaponry, or gun control, terrorists are going to find a way to cause terror; America needs to wake up. Security as a whole needs to be increased drastically.

To clarify, I am not by any means saying that the recent massacre in Las Vegas would have been preventable solely by security measures. What happened was a tragedy that has brought up a lot of controversy around new gun control legislation, but also brings up a question of security.

To commit a senseless crime as heinous as killing 59, and injuring over 500 innocent people, definitely brings up mental issues or no regard to human life.

If there ever was a time to make major security changes, the time is now. It is 2017, and you can walk into Disney World without any security check if you're not carrying a bag. The only security check that Disney World has is a bag check, and if randomly selected, a full body scanner. Disney Springs has no security whatsoever; no bag check, no metal detectors or anything. Universal Studios Orlando is one of the few tourist spots in Orlando that has taken full initiative, by requiring all guests to go through full body scanners with an additional bag check, like at the Airport.

The issue of gun control is still an issue that does need to be talked about, but we cannot sweep the issue of security under the rug. There is only so much prevention that can be done on the part of legislation.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
