Now that the new year is upon us, it's time to make some resolutions, with the goal of bettering ourselves. For me, one of my main goals is to become conversational in five languages. Here are six apps to help you learn on the go.
1. Memrise
Languages offered: English, Arabic, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, Vietnamese, & Welsh.
This is my personal favorite. Every course I've done has been fully voiced, and reviews are easy to do. You can go section by section, check your progress to the end of the lessons easily, and there are many different ways to learn, including timed quizzes and pronunciation practice!
2. Duolingo
Languages offered: English, Arabic, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Thai, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, Ukrainian, & Vietnamese.
The go-to app for high school language teachers, Duolingo is the first language-learning app I ever used. Recently, they've added a lot more languages, but many of them are just being beta tested. Duolingo's teaching style tends to work by teaching you one thing, then making you apply that knowledge to vocabulary you may not have learned yet.
3. Babbel
Languages offered: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, & Swedish.
Simpler than the others on this list, Babbel's language list is limited. However, it's great for short bus rides because each lesson is short and easy to get through! Plus, by having fewer languages, they can get really in depth.
4. Mango
Languages offered: Arabic (Egyptian, Iraqi, Levantine, MSA), Armenian, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Hebrew (Biblical, Standard), Chaldean Aramaic, Cherokee, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dari, Dutch, Dzongkha, Farsi (Persian), Finnish, French, French Canadian, German, Greek (Ancient, Koine, Standard), Haitian Creole, Hawaiian, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Igbo, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Javanese, Kazakh, Korean, Latin, Malay, Malayalam, Norwegian, Pashto, Pirate (yes, Pirate ), Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Scottish Gaelic, Serbian, Shanghainese, Slovak, Spanish (Latin America, Spain), Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Tuvan, Ukranian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, & Yiddish.
Without a doubt, Mango has the greatest list of languages of any app I've found. A few of these I hadn't even heard of till I joined Mango. They have many long lessons, great for those of us trying to really self-teach. Plus, you can unlock even more content for free by simply connecting to a library account!
5. HelloTalk
Languages offered: English, Arabic, Catalan, Danish, Esperanto, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Thai, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, & Vietnamese.
This app is basically a language-learning pen-pal service. You simply input your native language and target language, and then you have access to people with the inverse; your target language is their native, and your native language is their target. You get to talk to real native language speakers, helping each other learn and correct mistakes in written and spoken words.
6. HiNative
Languages offered: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, & Turkish.
Finally, HiNative. Similar to HelloTalk, you can speak to real native speakers of whatever language you want to learn. This app is for asking questions, mostly, so you can test your knowledge and pronunciation.
