Before I am attacked with comments telling me, "You are such a hater" or "You just wish you were like her and be where she's at," I have to say, I am happy for the success of Kylie's cosmetics.
We all have dreams we want to become a reality, right? Even famous people would love to be featured on the cover of Vogue Italia, play a protagonist role in a TV show, or even win an Oscar.
Although I am happy for Kylie's success, what I have a problem with is the inaccurate recognition she is receiving as being a woman that is "self-made".
Even dictionary.com took it to upon a tweet to re-iterate the meaning of what self-made means. That's where I have to agree.
Kylie is far from self-made. She was not brought up in a low-income home where she had to go to school and work her behind off in order to acquire a position later on in life. Perhaps even being in debt as a result of school.
She did not have close people around her who shut down her dreams nor individuals who ignored her upcoming brand on social media and called her "crazy" for it.
She did not have to move across the country in order to promote herself and her brand, in fact, she was the complete opposite of all that. If this was Kylie's story, then I would be praising her and actually categorize her as someone who is self-made.
She was born into a well-made family with crazy connections, and whose fame skyrocketed with their E! reality show.
If my own mother was my manager, if my father was a retired Olympic figure, and if my sisters were famous, of course, it would be easy for me to become a billionaire, a businesswoman, and a model. That's not the reality for many people.
There are STILL people today who are trying to get their name out there and promote their business. Yet sadly, they are being overshadowed by those who have access to well-known business people and by someone who was born with a silver spoon in their mouth.
Kylie, I hate to tell you but you do not know what it is like to have your own family and friends against you for following your dreams. You do not know what it is like to take a little number of funds you have gained and put it in jeopardy in order to try something new and leave your comfort zone.
You do not know what it is like to leave the home you've always known and your loved ones to establish yourself in a new place where you're probably going to starve and have doors being shut in your face. You do not know what it is like being told "no".
Although you were being helped by your family and their connections, your fan base helped you as well. Of course, that is because of your family's fame. But can we talk about the unnecessary support that you were given?
Do you think that it is fair to have so many people around the world in need of food, water, care, and shelter and instead your fan base takes it upon themselves to start a GoFund me page to make you a billionaire?
Did you even call them out on it?
Even though it was a joke, it's amazing to me how many people are putting their time and money into it.
I hope your fanbase gives back to Flint, Puerto Rico, and other countries who are struggling. Just saying.
I'd like to see more self-made stories like Ashley Graham's and her struggles trying to get to the top as a plus-size model or like Anastasia Soare's journey as an 18-year-old who left her home in Romania and established herself in Hollywood in order to achieve her dreams. Her struggles eventually bloomed into Anastasia Beverly Hills.
Although I am happy you have achieved your dreams of launching your cosmetics, I am not okay with the fact that the world is considering you to be self-made.
People, let's take the time to support those around us and their hustle.
That way, we will have many more self-made, successful people.
