We all have something that we don't like about ourselves. For me, it's my lazy eye. For Kylie Jenner, it's her natural lips - or at least, was. For the past two years, Kylie Jenner has changed the game with her multi-million-dollar brand Kylie Cosmetics and her lip kits. At this point, her lips have possibly become more famous than she has. Due to her high power as an influencer, once her lip kits started skyrocketing, so did the idea of cosmetic enhancements.
Now, I'm all for the idea of doing what makes you feel your best. What disappoints me is that the millennial idea of "best" is through cosmetic enhancement. Whatever happened to true natural beauty, thin lips and all?
Lately, I've been seeing more and more pictures on my Instagram timeline of young girls and women with lip fillers, eyelash extensions, and even breast enhancements, and I just have one question – what is wrong about living through the actual definition of "natural beauty"?
To me, embracing natural beauty is one of the most important things we can do as women. Once we embrace who we really are, we become even more powerful and inspirational. Why alter the definition of true beauty when we can live by it?
A few a weeks ago, Kylie Jenner broke the internet and finally got rid of her lip fillers, and I was shooketh to the core. Finally, vanity no longer seemed like her main priority.
I think that's what is stopping young girls around the world from embracing their natural beauty – vanity.
We live in a world where we post pictures online only to gain the gratification of a "like" and "share" amount. This purpose only creates more insecurity. If we don't get the number of likes that we desire, we question our looks and then resort to other means to get this look we're going for.
Whenever I post a selfie on Instagram or any social media platform for that matter, I tend to question, "Is my lazy eye noticeable?". Then I take a step back and say, "Who cares?". Every little quality we possess makes us who we are.
My lazy eye makes me who I am, and Kylie Jenner's naturally thin lips make her who she is.
I'm proud of her for taking a stand and getting rid of her lip fillers. She knew that it would cause an internet fiasco, but according to the media, she had done it for selfless reasons. She did it for her daughter and her future.
We need to learn from each other. As women, it's so easy to learn from each other in the wrong ways. Instead of comparing and trying to look like one another, we need to accept who we are flaws and all.
It doesn't matter if you have a five-head, crooked nose, a lazy eye, saddlebags, a flat chest, or even short lashes, you are beautiful as your natural self.
As much as I love cosmetics as much as the next millennial, I will always be an advocate for natural beauty. When you take off your face at the end of the day, you have to face yourself. Start loving what you see when you take off that last bit of mascara. You'll be so much better off.
