You Know You're Overworked When

How do I know if I've stretched myself too thin?

Between classes, homework, work, and extra curricular activities, there aren't enough hours in the day. Being busy isn't a bad thing, especially if you're doing something you enjoy. This year is my busiest year by far, and I only realized it after I signed up for everything. It's manageable, but some days are harder than others. Here are some ways to tell when you're overworking yourself.

There are at least two things (besides eating and sleeping) higher on your priority list than homework.

Some things are more important than homework. Paying rent is always important. Leadership positions also require extra work and hours.

Your list of extra curricular activities is extensive.

It takes you at least five minutes to explain everything you're busy with this semester. Between all of your meetings, your week is packed. Then you also have a lot of full weekends.

You schedule your lunch breaks.

If you don't, then you'll forget to eat. Nothing is worse than realizing at midnight that you didn't eat lunch. Plus, the later you wait, the less options you have. Do you want frozen pizza or fast food?

You keep staying up later and later just to finish everything.

I used to be really strict about my sleep schedule, but this year I've been pushing my bed time later and later. I'm not a fan of coffee, but it's becoming my best friend.

You set reminders for everything.

If you don't set a reminder for it, then you won't remember. Sometimes you forget even with the reminders because you don't remember why you set it. I set at least ten alarms everyday.

You still haven't unpacked your room.

It's the second or third week of school, but you haven't fully unpacked yet. Pulling things out of your bag when you need it is much easier than actually taking the time to unpack.

You only do your laundry when you can't hold off any longer.

To be honest, most college students do this, but you do it because you don't have enough time to spare. How many times can you re-wear jeans before it's a problem?

Your agenda/calendar/planner is packed.

Your handwriting has to be 5 point font to fit everything on the page. My planner is almost impossible to read, partially due to my bad handwriting and partially because all of the words run into each other.

Even though you might've signed up for too much, you feel a strong sense of accomplishment at the end of the week when you realize you've made it through. Between that and enjoying new experiences, signing up for everything isn't too bad.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
