I am not a morning person, so my full schedule of morning classes doesn't always put me in the best of moods. I was walking to class when I saw something out of the corner of my eye sitting on top of the fire extinguisher case in the stairwell. I notice small details pretty quickly, but this thing was bright blue so it was hard to miss. It wasn't until I was sitting in class that I finally realized what it was.
My friend Liz told me about a project she was doing with her son a few months ago; it was called the Kindness Rocks Project.
Basically, anonymous people create rock art and hide it around their local area. People have found rocks in libraries, parks, trees, or even on the sidewalk. The idea behind it is that even something as small as a painted rock can change someone's day.
After class, I went back to the stairwell and picked up the rock. It was smooth and bright blue. The words "You Matter" were painted in white letters on the front, while on the back was "Radford Rocks, #KindnessRocksProject."
According to thekindnessrocksproject.com, the main goal of the project is "To promote random acts of kindness to unsuspecting recipients." That one rock with only two words written on the front had completely turned around my mood. The thing that is so special about it is that anyone can make someone's day just a little bit better.
With research, I found there are multiple communities linked through Facebook showing off hiding spots and rocks they found. There is a Radford group close to 300 members and a group in my hometown of Fairfax, Virginia with over 1,000 members. People from all walks of life get together on these pages and talk about how these rocks made a positive impact on their day or even their lives. I also found out that unless you really need it, hide the rock again so you can make someone's day better too. I plan on painting rocks myself and hiding them around campus so that I will make someone's day better too. You never know when someone really needs it.
