"When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind" - Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
This quote from my favorite movie, Wonder, fully exemplifies the daily choice that we encounter. To me, this choice seems like an obvious one, but a common mindset in today's society is to be "right", no matter how many people are hurt or undermined. I understand that no one likes to be wrong, but when it is at the expense of others happiness, worth, or respect it is simply not the correct choice.
We choose to be "right" as a mechanism of proving our self-worth and insecurities to others. This detrimental way of thinking is a catalyst for a large amount of hate and fear instilled in people today. While I am fully aware that kindness cannot solve these problems, I believe it can alleviate some of the ignorance and hate people feel emotionally and physically imprisoned by.
Kindness is a great strength as there is a special kind of power attached to it. It is not the power of importance, wealth, or status, but it is unwavering selflessness, understanding, and genuine care for those around us. Kindness doesn't promote individual monetary growth or social status, but it creates a collective understanding of what it means to be a respectful human on this earth (something we seem to have forgotten over the years.)
As simple as being kind is, it is not as easy as waking up and drinking a big 'ol cup of kindness. Instead, as Dr. Dyer pointed out, it is a conscious choice that we need to consistently make in our daily life. And the best part about kindness is that it is free. It doesn't cost money, time, or even a large amount of energy. All it takes is a smile, a simple "hello", or just listening to others.
A little bit of kindness goes a long way. Everyone has hidden battles they are fighting, so taking a minute to show another person that you truly care about them is invaluable. Share your worth and compassion with those around you by being kind to others and to yourself.
