L.L.Bean Wants You To Get Out And Play

On Saturday August 19th, I attended L.L.Bean's Kids' Get Out and Play Day in Freeport, Maine. L.L.Bean is a Maine based store that designs products to make it easier for families to spend time outside. It was a free event for kids of all ages to attend different activities outdoors. The event went on from 10am-4pm. There were several different activities going on throughout the day (picture of schedule below), but I'm going to focus on the ones I was able to attend.

I went with my sister, Jessica, and two of my favorite kids, Ariana (Ari), and Zavier (Z).

Upon arriving, we took a picture by L.L.Bean's iconic (Bean) Boot. If you're ever in Freeport, Maine- you have to take a picture with the boot. In fact, as a bit of a size reference I'll include a picture of my sister's dog, Buttercup, next to it.

While picking up the flyer with the schedule on it, as well as a map of the surrounding area, we checked out the fish inside L.L. Bean and Ari sat in the "bubble" to feel like she was with the fish.

The first event we went to was the Happy Camper Book Fair Presented By Scholastic. They had books for all ages and a portion of the proceeds went to benefit Freeport's Morse Street School. Both the kids got to pick out a book. Ari going with a nighttime book about a ninja and Z picked a book about trains. Ari even got to meet Clifford the Big Red Dog.

We then headed over to see some beautiful birds presented by an organization called Wind Over Wings, which sadly will be retiring by the end of the year. They educate people on helping to protect wildlife and provide a safe place for birds who can no longer survive in their natural habitat. They showed us a total of 6 birds during their hour event. 2 Saw-whet Owl's named Pippin and Asta, an Eastern Screech Owl named Tansy, a Red-shouldered Hawk named Cessna, a Common Raven named Zachariah, and a Great-horned Owl named Queen Solomon. Each volunteer presented a bird and shared their story and the experience was wonderful and the birds were beautiful. (Pictures of birds are in order mentioned above)

After sitting down to eat we went over to the stage and watched a magic show by Norman Ng. He was incredibly talented, funny, and a lot of the kids in the audience got to participate.

As it was a hot day, and Z fell asleep during the show, we went over and got ice cream at Ben and Jerry's and sat down at a picnic table next to the Woodland Village, that had small fairy like houses for kids to play in. After our sweet treat, the kids ran around and played for a while, a perfect ending to the day.

As we made our way aroud the event, we passed the Miclon Brothers juggling, as well as the L.L. Bean bear, where we took a picture.

The kids fell asleep before we even pulled out of the parking lot and they had an amazing day, as I'm sure the other kids did as well. There was so many other activities to do throughout the day. Bogs Footwear was having a contest to design their next print for the kid's Bogs boots, authors read their books, OgoSport brought some of their outdoor toys for kids to try, and so much more.

Freeport, Maine is a very nice area. From the L.LBean section of it, to outlet shopping, local Maine Business', and a state park. It's a great place to spend the day in Maine.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
