Kesha's Freedom and Rape Culture

When does it end?

Kesha Rose Sebert walked into a New York City courtroom this past Friday hoping for good news. She filed for a preliminary injunction for release under her Sony contract, last September. She had worked with hit producer Dr. Luke for years, but confessed a secret she had been keeping out of fear.

In early 2014, after checking into rehab, the news broke that she had been suffering from an eating disorder brought on by mental and emotional abuse by Dr. Luke. Repeatedly throughout her career, he mistreated her, once comparing her body to a refrigerator. Later that year, after filing a lawsuit against him, it leaked that the same man had sexually abused her. He had drugged her and raped her from the age of 18 when she first signed with him. In the suit, it was also stated that her eating disorder worsened due to his abuse. While Kesha began sobbing, the judge had denied her injunction due to her signing a contract that was already negotiated and not unusual for music.

Back in 2005, an unknown Kesha signed with Dr. Luke and Kemosable Entertainment. While she wasn’t successful with her own career, she sang back up for Paris Hilton and appeared in Katy Perry’s music video. She wasn’t credited for vocals on Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” but eventually became a name on her own.

Finally in 2010, known then as Ke$ha, she released her own song “Tik Tok.” It broke digital records and soon went to number 1. In the media, the song was played all over and her aesthetic was questioned. She was unsophisticated, unpolished and all herself. She sang about money, getting drunk and being with dudes. She continued her carefree, rock star persona for many years, producing hit after hit. While continuing this reign, she was also quite a beautiful person. She gave back to her hometown after floods, was a global ambassador for animal rights and petitioned for self-love. Her docu-series, Kesha: My Crazy, Beautiful Life, showed another side of the talented artist. The other side included a family person, someone close to fans and an incredibly kind and loveable young woman. It also revealed her adventures, hard work ethic and incredible talent.

No one really knew what was really going on behind her celebrity persona though. After putting a stop to her ordeal, she checked into rehab, which was originally reported just for her eating disorder. Once the public knew what actually happened, chaos ensued. Dr. Luke denied the allegations and many supported him. They stated that he wouldn’t do it and why would she stay if she were abused. They blamed her image, how she acted and her music’s message. This is rape culture.

This term is widely debated. Some don’t believe it’s even real and that it’s an excuse to push away responsibility. To some it’s just seen as something made up by feminists. Some say there isn’t a rape epidemic and some lie about their rape. A big question by these rape apologists is, “what were you drinking/wearing/doing?”

This is a major problem in 2016.

While some refuse to take part in the conversation, every 107 seconds, another American is raped. We don’t hear from every one of these men and women because of fear. Out of 100 rapes, 32 are reported with seven leading to an arrest and only two being convicted and in prison.

Someone coming forward with his or her story of abuse is brave. They know the backlash and questions they’ll be forced to answer and yet they speak. Traumatic events are relived and still questioned. We shouldn’t be trivializing someone’s tale or blame the victim. We shouldn’t be saying only certain women get raped, usually if they’re promiscuous. We shouldn’t think that men can’t be raped either and we shouldn’t teach women how not to be raped. Instead we should teach how not to rape.

After coming out of rehab, Kesha dropped the money sign out of her name, signaling life changes. On Instagram, she posted pictures of her in a sweatshirt with “Ima Survivor” printed and a clean, beaming face. It's quite the contrasting image with her a few days ago in the courtroom. It shows the lack of justice and closure a victim receives. As she goes on to 13 years of abuse, it begins to feel like there's no end in sight.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
