The Pulitzer Prize is a prestigious award, named after famed newspaper publisher and inventor of yellow journalism Joseph Pulitzer, and recognizes achievement in American journalism, literature, or music. Thirteen awards are given out each year, and this year Kendrick Lamar won in the category of music.
Lamar won the award for his studio album, "DAMN.," becoming the first rapper to receive the award, as well as being the first winner who isn't a classical or jazz musician.
The album features Rihanna, U2, and Mike WiLL Made-It, and was one of the most streamed album's last year, tackling the issues of race, religion, politics, faith, and the road to success.
"DAMN." is Lamar's fourth LP, and portrays rap music in a different light. The tracks on the album feature vernacular authenticity, dynamic rhythms, and a varied collection of songs to show the complexity of modern African-American life. Lamar's talent as a lyricist has led him to become one of the greatest rappers of all time; "DAMN." Selling over 3.5 million albums has proven just that. Hats off to my man, Kendrick Lamar!
