Keep Calm and Job Search On

A short list to help you stay motivated through the struggle.

Keep Calm and Job Search On

We all know that finding a job can be a brutal and lengthy process. All we hear about are "highly competitive positions" and the need for 5 years experience when you've just graduated, even as you apply for unpaid internships.

Personally, I'm graduating without having a clue of what I'll be doing next. While we are the quiet minority (or so I think), I don't doubt that we are out there. Feeling a little lost or maybe a little worried? Try some of these:

1. Savor the Unknown.

So maybe you still don't know what you're doing. It might be the first time you've experienced having this kind of unstructured time with a dubious future. But remember how great that once was? When you were a kid and the summers were just full of fun and hanging out with friends and family members? Take some time to yourself. Try something new. Understand that everything will be okay and you'll figure it out.

2. Breathe!

You can do this. It might be totally overwhelming and sometimes frustrating, but just take it one step at a time and keep your eyes on the prize. Take a little time out of each day to work on "job stuff." And don't be too hard on yourself, it's difficult for everyone out there.

3. Search, search, search.

Use all of your resources - Google, job search engines, your parents, your friends. Talk to everyone. Find people who are doing what you want to do and try to reach out to them. Just chat! Ask them how they got to where they are now, what were the decisions they made. Make connections with them and try to keep those connections.

Really, just do it. You're awesome, this listing looks awesome, the worst that can happen is that you don't get the job and you keep looking. But have confidence in yourself! Hard to do while still looking for your dream job, but you're just trying to find the perfect fit. YES it's repetitive and you have to sell yourself, YES it's annoying, YES you have the skills and you can do the job - don't get discouraged!

5. Breathe again.

It sucks. You've probably applied to 20 different places and haven't heard back. But that's okay! Remember the first few steps? Relax, keep looking and apply again. Keep talking to people, tell them what you're looking for and maybe they can point you in the right direction. Sooner or later, something will come around. Even if you need to get an in-between job to keep some money in your pockets while continuing your search, this is what almost everyone else has gone through before. If they can do it, so can you.

Social Media Or Soul Media

To the generation that cares way too much about affirmation.

Emma Smith
  • This semester I am taking the ever so famous class, Writing 101. Walking into it, I had heard the horror stories about each major assignment. I have to admit, it’s not a class that I am fond of. But, major assignment #2 got me thinking, we had to create a research question based off of a topic that we are interested in.

Two weeks prior, I watched a very interesting documentary on Netflix. Miss Representation was recommended to me by one of my friends and I have to say the topic is absolutely mind blowing. Social Media and Female Body Image. How Social Media makes girls see this unnatural perfection of ‘beauty’ that really doesn’t exist. But female body image isn’t the only thing affected by social media.
