Summer is prime time for adventuring outdoors and being by the water. Two years ago, I went kayaking with some friends for the first time and discovered a new hobby that I love!
I have always felt at home in the water. I spent eight years of my life as a lifeguard and was on my high school's competitive swim team. My dad had a small boat as well, so I used to spend a lot of time at lakes. Kayaking is just a new way for me to enjoy being out on the water. One of the great things about kayaking is that there are so many varied ways to experience it. Whether you are seeking the heart-stopping exhilaration of a roller coaster or the serenity and peace of getting lost in the moment, you can find your passion in a kayak.
1. Kayak anywhere
One of the great things is that there are lots of different environments in which one can kayak. Lakes and rivers may be the top choices, but you can also kayak in the ocean. And if you're new to kayaking, you can definitely go at your own pace. Starting out in still-water, such as a lake, is probably best if you've never tried it before so you can get the hang of it.
2. Kayak anytime
Another great thing about kayaking is the boats are available to rent. Many lakes have a boathouse where you may pay to rent a kayak for a specific amount of time. You don't have to go out and buy your own kayak to be able to participate.
3. Kayak to stay cool in the summer
Nothing beats the waterside as a way to cool off during those hot summer days. It's great to be able to throw on your swimsuit and go out. If it's really hot, you can always reach over and splash some water on yourself.
4. Kayak to relax
Flatwater kayaking, or kayaking that takes place in calm water, is a wonderful way to relax. You can take a break from paddling to enjoy the view or eat a lunch.
5. Kayak for exercise
It can also be a way to get in a workout! Is it arm day? You'll be using a lot of upper body strength to keep those paddles moving.
6. Kayak for adventure
This is a great opportunity to explore a place from a completely different perspective. Whether you're trying white-water rafting or just kayaking in a new environment, there is so much to see!
7. Kayak to be close to nature
Sometimes the best way to rejuvenate is by being outdoors. Kayaking allows you to "go with the flow". You may even see wildlife while you are out there. I like seeing the blue herons at the lakes near where I live.
8. Kayak to spend time with friends
Another thing that makes kayaking so versatile is that it can be done solo, with a small group, or as part of a larger group. If you need to disconnect for a while, it's totally fine to go out on your own. However, it is also fun to rent some boats with your friends. There are solo kayaks as well as double kayaks that are built for two people.
9. Kayak for fun
The best thing about kayaking is that it is fun! Since there are a lot of different ways you can experience it, you can truly make it fit your personality.
My favorite way to kayak is out on a lake with friends. We pack up a lunch to have out on the water and bring a Bluetooth speaker.
Whatever the circumstances that drive you to try kayaking, one thing keeps you coming back. It is the indescribable feeling that you get by stepping into a kayak, pushing away from land, dipping the kayak paddle into the water, and taking that first stroke! As you leave your cares, problems, and stresses on the shore, you are floating and feel free.
