This week, ABC premiered the revival of "American Idol". The one thing that seems to be memorable from the premiere is that judge, Katy Perry, went too far. Benjamin Glaze, who was nineteen at the time, auditioned in hopes of pursuing his musical dreams but instead was greeted with getting his experience of a first kiss taken from him.
Judge Katy Perry did not ask him if he wanted to kiss her. She forced him to approach her at the table and told him to kiss her on the check. He did, but the first time was not good enough for her. She made him do it a second time. But, this time, turned her head fast enough to where he kissed her on the lips and not the cheek. When this happened, the other two judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, cheered Perry on. They applauded her and asked if she did it.
This all happened back in October when the Harvey Weinstein allegations where coming to light. Once, Idol premiered this past week, New York Times reached out to Benjamin Glaze. Glaze said he wishes that his first was not taken from him. He would have said no if Perry had foretold what her plans were. Social media has tweeted and commented about why Glaze should be honored and how he is dumb for complaining that he was kissed by Katy Perry. But, Glaze claims this not sexual assault. How is it not?
The double standard is astounding.
In the time since the Harvey Weinstein discoveries, there has been an allegation toward a male celebrity every month. There has not been a single one of a female celebrity. If Luke Bryan or Lionel Richie were to have done what Katy Perry did, the country would be in an outrage. Either one of them would already be written off the show and it most likely would have never even been aired.
This is what we need to be changing in our society. Woman are not only the victims, men are too. This is the double standard that we need to change.
And, this is not Perry's first occurrence of publicly kissing a fan. As a part of her "California Dreams" tour, Perry said at each venue for any male who wants to come up on stage with her to take off their shirt. She then proceeded to bring one on stage with her where she would kiss them and then have her kiss them back. When society began to question this tactic of hers, she told them to "simmer down". Perry is not the first woman to get away this either.
Back in 2015, during a Coachella performance, Madonna thought it would be okay to plant a heavy dirty kiss on rapper, Drake. A kiss that was clearly unplanned and is very much sexual assault went ignored and unpunished.
If we want to redefine the standards by which we are judged by our gender, this is what needs to stop. Before any evidence was found, Danny Masterson had lost his job. Then, with piles of evidence, no action is taken against Perry and no action was taken against Madonna.
Perry is held unaccountable and is continuing to be a part of the "American Idol" community. A show that is on ABC, America's Network.
America's Network needs to do their job at helping create a better America.
