I will be honest when I first saw the news about Jordyn Woods I was instantly drawn in. If you have not heard, TMZ reported that Kylie Jenner's best friend had an inappropriate relationship with the father of Khloe Kardashian's baby. Then the memes and jokes about the whole situation took center stage on social media. The subject remains a trending topic on Instagram and Twitter even days after the news broke. But what does our curiosity and desire to see the situation play out say about us?
Why are we so invested in the personal lives and hardships of the Kardashians outside of Keeping up with the Kardashians? Is it because of their popular reality TV show that we are overly invested in their lives outside of the show? Or are we invested in seeing them struggle? I believe it is the later. If we solely cared about the Kardashians because of their tv show we would not be invested in their lives outside of the episodes that play on television. Yet, we make them trending topics and spend our time trying to figure out the situation.
What does that say about our culture in general? Are we only excited to see the drama of celebrities or do we do that to the people directly around us? Do we hope to see failures and enjoy making fun of the situation of others? In media, there is a saying "if it bleeds, it leads" I believe that can be applied to drama also. Social media has given us instant access to investigate, judge and view other people's lives. It has also given us the ability to share our opinions and popularize ourselves through the process. Those who have posted popular memes and tweets are now benefiting from the struggles of Kylie, Jordyn, and Khloe. They are growing in followers while essentially bullying celebrities.
At the end of the day, the jokes are about real people and a very real situation. The jokes making fun of the end of Kylie and Jordyn's relationship are about a situation that will likely change their friendship forever. Kylie Jenner may be the youngest billionaire, but she is also a girl who faces the betrayal of a best friend. Woods is also facing her whole life changing. If the reports that she was intoxicated are true, then her life is forever changed by a situation that is not about love. As for Khloe, Khloe is a real person with real feelings despite all the jokes being made. Is it our place to celebrate and exploit the struggles of celebrities just because they are in the entertainment industry?
