Throwback to 1993, teens rocking the choker necklace and grunge, Clinton had only been in office for a few months, the Backstreet Boys had just begun to form, and then there was June 11. June 11, 1993, Steven Spielberg released his masterpiece we all know as Jurassic Park.
Fast forward to June 22, 2018, I in my oversized Hilton Head sweatshirt and black vans with a bucket of popcorn was not sure I was ready for the sequel/five installment to the franchise, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Being the great movie nerd I am, I must admit, I'm a bit confused. Confused, but good.
It has been three years since the horrific and violent events that occured on the island of Isla Nublar. The dormant volcano on the island where the last of the dinos live is now active and quite angry causing the second coming of extinction of the dinosaurs (warning some scenes are tear jerkers). Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) are called upon to do their part. With this comes the nagging question: Is this the right thing to do? Even the best laid plans and best intentions can take a turn for the worst, and this is where the story's conflict emerges. Again, we are asked if we should partake in science can't be controlled.
For any film fanatic, this movie will be dream. Included are "easter eggs" and references to Jurassic Park and other of Spielberg films.
The film follows the tradition of the good shall survive and the evil must perish, but it gets old. True, these villains should have to pay the price for their crime, but the ultimate price? They left in the idea that nature always finds its way, and Jeff Goldblum resurrects his character Dr. Ian Malcolm who continues to speak out against changing history. In a way, science can even be considered an antagonist or the ultimate bad guy in this film. Fallen Kingdom will leave you with an unsettling feeling, but that seems to be their intention.
Trying to describe Fallen Kingdom without ruining the film is a difficult task. While it isn't as good as the 2015 Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom stands out in its own way. Director J.A. Boyna connects these films in an obvious manner, and goes on to establish much more of a continuation of the franchise than the previous films leaving viewers feeling there is more to come.
