Why Joining Kappa Psi Omega Was The Right Decision
Alyssa Eckley

When I made the decision to go to Heidelberg University, the last thing on my mind was joining a sorority. I’m not “srat” by any means and to be honest, all I knew about Greek life was what I had seen in movies. I wasn’t impressed. However, after being on campus those first few months, I started being able to see myself joining one of the sororities on campus and I am so glad that I did. I joined Kappa Psi Omega and it was one of the best decisions I made because I have gained so much from my experience.

Sisters I never knew I needed

I have plenty of siblings and I’d be the first to tell you that I don’t need any more. Well, at least that’s what I thought. Kappa brought me not only the 11 amazing girls in my pledge class, but also many more actives and alumni that I know I can always count on. These girls have become some of my best friends and biggest supporters. They’re the first to congratulate any of my successes, always down for a coffee run and fully prepared with advice whenever it is needed. I could not be more thankful for them. We really do mean it when we say, “We have a bond that lasts forever; we have a bond that never ends”.

Valuable life skills

One of the first things I learned when I joined Kappa was time management, something I was never really good at before. The real world doesn’t care if you have 10 papers due in three days, cheerleading practice, meetings and you need to sleep. Kappa taught me how to juggle all of that. I’ve learned that sometimes you have to make sacrifices but you still have to have respect, be accountable and be able to work as a team. Most importantly, I’ve learned that no matter what you do, do it with passion, integrity and dedication.

Greek unity

Not only do I have my sisters in Kappa, I also have an entire Greek life family. I have gotten to know so many people, that I might not have talked to otherwise, because of our involvement in Greek life. I have become friends with their actives and alumni and I’ve even lived with some of them. Our different groups make us unique, but as a whole we are one big family.

Memories

Together, we have created so many memories and inside jokes. These are the girls that have literally held my hand through the best and worst of everything. Whether it was a weekend out, a seven hour meeting in the Kappa hall, Daisy, or just a lunch date with my pledge sisters we always have a good time. I have shared so many laughs, tears, and embarrassing moments with these girls and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Let’s be honest, who else would do a synchronized swim team routine indoors with no pool or sing old country songs for hours at the top of our lungs? We’ve all got friends in low places, I’m just happy to have found the ones that would give me a daisy and sisterhood.

A place to call home

No matter where I go, I will always have a home at Heidelberg because of Kappa. It really isn’t just four years; it is a lifetime of sisterhood that I will always cherish. I could not have found a better group of girls to call my sisters. I am proud of their accomplishments and I know that wherever we end up we will always have Kappa to bring us back together. Year after year we’ll come back to this place just to remember the society that brought us together in the first place. We are the best, we beat all the rest, we are from Kappa Psi.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
