Student organizations are a great way to step out of your comfort zone, meet people, and network for future jobs. There are a lot of social Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) like book clubs, swing dancing, and Intervarsity but there are also many academic ones like American Marketing Association, DECA, and Business Professionals of American. All RSOs can be put on your resume to show that you are involved in the community you are a part of, but academic organization gives you experience that can be applied in your future job and can offer you an edge in the competitive job market.
Each organization you find on college campuses have their benefits and offer different things. Some organizations can teach you things that will be beneficial not only in your professional life but your social life as well. Swing Dance, for example, is an RSO here at Davenport that teaches people to swing dance for the first hour or so then the rest of the time they put it into action. Organizations like these help later on to not only dance but to be confident and outgoing, skills that can be used in social situations.
Every college has a student life department (sometimes it’s included with student services), and they are usually in charge of setting up student ran organizations and helping maintain them. If you can't find an organization to join or they don't have one you're interested in why not make one? Creating a student organization can be a great experience and will show you the community you are apart of works. Finding other students interested, creating the organization’s rules, and deciding meeting times and office positions, all go into creating an RSO. It does sound like a lot, and it is but, in the end, it will all be worth it because you would have made a lot of friends along the way and learned things about your school you didn't know before.
There are student organizations for everyone, and if not you can always make it. Organizations do events and give you something to do over the school year. They make it easy to make friends and gain valuable life skills. Join a student organization at your school today
