Earlier this week, ESPN anchor, Jemele Hill took to Twitter to voice her displeasure with President Trump. In her tweets, she stated "Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself [with] other white supremacists. She asserts "Trump is the most ignorant, offensive President of [her] lifetime". Hill mentions "his rise is the direct result of white supremacy. He is not a leader. And if he were not white, he never would have been elected."
Jemele Hill later issued an apology in saying "my regret is that my comments and the public way I made them painted ESPN in an unfair light."
Should she have apologized? I believe she owed ESPN an apology for the way her comments made the company look. However, Hill had a right to express her beliefs toward Donald Trump. Also, credit to ESPN for not taking drastic actions against Hill, but allowing her to right her "supposed" wrong.
Any time a person of color speaks out against the current administration or white supremacy, there is some outrage. But why are people upset? Are they angered by the comment or the truths behind it? The same way Colin Kaepernick takes heat for not standing for the anthem, the actual "why" takes a backseat to the "what". Recently, Ms.Texas of the Ms. USA pageant spoke out against Trump, at the competition he sponsors, yet, there was no briefing to condemn the comments, there was no outrage. Why?
During protests in Charlottesville, Trump condemned "both sides". Though it was only one side that was responsible for the mayhem in the first place. The man on countless occasions had refused to denounce or condemn the white supremacists who support him. What does that say about Trump? He has constantly attacked immigrants and made derogatory comments about women. He condemned a whole race as killers, rapists, and thieves. Yet, he wants an apology for being called a supremacist. Of course.
The President himself demanded an apology, which reveals where his priorities lie. The fact that a press briefing was held to denounce the comments as a "fireable offense", is ridiculous. It's an overreaction from someone who is "supposed" to be running the country. He's the most "thin-skinned" president of our time and this minor controversy proves as much.
Credit to Jemele Hill for speaking out against Trump. Not everyone has the courage to say what she said. People should speak up against injustices and the actions of our leaders. She should not be punished, but rather praised for her bravery and willingness to be a voice.
