Cinematic Music Group artist, Jayy Grams has recently dropped his newest EP 'Good Times'. Grams is a Baltimore based rapper who veers away from the "normal" Baltimore sound. The Baltimore rap scene consists of acts like YBS Skola, Young Moose, Lor Scoota (R.I.P) and many others. These rappers all have their own unique flows, but they stick to a distinct sound that is native to Baltimore. It's that very aggression and passion they express towards their city that makes them worth listening to. Instead, Grams give us those raw Joey Bada$$ New York vibes, which only makes it more alluring to see what more he has to offer.
Grams starts 'Good Times' off with a mellow intro accompanied by chains slanging in the background; this serves as his declaration of being a new artist in the game as he says "welcome to my project, I just want yall to listen to what goes on in my head". Normally, you don't hear new artists these days give an actual "intro", Grams doing this allows us to see that this album will be more than personable -- it's him, full throttle. This introduction gives us the inside scoop on the life that he has lived, from his father doing drugs to having to hustle hard throughout his whole life. He tackles the issue of police brutality in his community and asserts that "Black lives don't really matter, this shit is all a game," which is simply a diss to the police force because it's not in their interest to actually protect our Black people.
'5 AM' is one of my favorites from the album, it begins with a simple piano accompanied by Grams monotone voice and then transitions into an upbeat melody that instantly causes you to bop your head. This record is Grams's "pay attention" track because he states how he is "debatably the best out" and how "the waiting got me stressed out". People are able to see how hungry Grams is; he feels it's just a matter of time until he becomes the next big thing in the rap game. Grams is truly a storyteller, not only because that's what most rappers are, but because he actually takes us through his everyday life and/or past life -- we get that real.
As an artist signed to Cinematic, I'm not surprised that Jayy Grams' lyricism is up to par. He is definitely an artist that the Hip-hop game has been waiting for. I'm excited to see how he will develop in his next projects and if he will get the recognition he deserves.
