I have been told by a lot of people that I need to give "The Bachelor" a chance. I will admit that I am making all of my opinions and forming all of my thoughts around what I think I know. But even so, there is a lot I do not like about the show that I cannot get past.
For one, the entire idea of having 24 women competing over one man (or vice versa, really. I think "The Bachelorette" is creepy, too) is super creepy. After all, this man is getting to know all of these women and slowly crushing their dreams over and over again, week after week, until the end of the season. That's kind of messed up! And the longer these women last, the worse I imagine it is. Of course, the women are not going to fly off the handle at being eliminated, but I would be devastated (if I even made it on the show, which brings me to my next point...)
As well, the lack of diversity on the show is astounding. I have seen in the promo pictures from the last few seasons maybe 15 women of color, if that. The blond-to-brunette ratio is super uneven, and redheads are barely even present. All of these women look the same, have the same jobs, quirks, and hobbies, and frankly, it pisses me off that all of these women are super thin. One clip I saw featured a woman saying she was "plus sized" and then in the next episode she was in a bikini and lamenting about being a size 8 in a testimonial. Are you kidding me?!
This season, all I have really seen is a lot of posting about how this year's bachelor is a virgin. The producers and contestants have harped about it for a while, and it's really making me roll my eyes, even when looking at memes. Just because the man is a virgin does not mean that it needs to be pointed out again and again. And just because he is saving himself does not make him less of a man, and it shouldn't be a challenge for these contestants like I feel like it has been in all the short clips and articles I've seen. I think the show is gross in principle, and it is getting out of hand.
I understand that a lot of people watch the show because it has some genuinely sweet parts. It has some good drama. It's edge-of-your-seat anticipation to see who will get the rose. But I think that this show is trashier than a lot of reality shows I've seen simply based on the fact that there doesn't seem to be any real CHALLENGE to the show, except making a good first impression and keeping the other women from stealing the guy's attention from you.
It doesn't feel real. It doesn't seem fair. And it doesn't seem like anything but a huge attention grab.
If someone wants to correct me, feel free to try. But the entire concept disgusts me.
