It's Time We Appreciate The Arts

Too many programs have been cut for us to continue to ignore this

Return of Kings

Many high schools and colleges, including my own, look down on the art programs that are offered (these arts programs include English, art, theater, music, philosophy, etc.). Being an English major with a writing concentration, I'm constantly asked "What are you going to do? Teach?" followed by "Well if you aren't teaching, what are you going to do with that?" English majors are not only allowed to teach. We can write, work for advertising, and write basically anything for anyone (it really is a lost art). You can sit and complain that kids nowadays use the computer more than they write, but when these kids try to write for a profession, they're told they can't.

Without the arts we wouldn't have music or pieces of artwork to admire. We wouldn't have elaborate movies, TV shows, or books. Without art programs many voices will go unheard, and these kids that are told that they cannot go for their dreams will give up with ease.

As an English major, I will find a real job just like anyone else. My fellow classmates and close friends will also find jobs, other than teaching, and make a dent in the world that continues to say that the arts do not matter. Read a classic, or watch a film, and then argue that the arts are not important.

The amount of English majors are dropping, as well as other fine art programs. Freshman students state that they do not need a composition class to succeed as a student (you do!!), and English majors are thought to be taking the easy way through school. It's not easy, and it's offensive to say it, just as it is to anyone in any major. Many students struggle to write collegiate papers, and basic writing skills are left behind for

Imagine a world without music, or art, or literature. A world where we have no philosophers to ponder, or no films or TV shows to enjoy. Without music, writing, or arts in general we would not be living in the world we do today.

Support your local high school/college band and choir, and join the clubs on campus that promote the arts and creativity. Write a poem and submit it, paint a picture and show it off.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
