I may be Greek, but the one thing I have a hard time understanding are ‘rush’ videos. I am all for marketing and getting your organizations name out there, but is there really a need to make a video exploiting the fakeness of recruitment? I mean come on. You blowing bubbles and eating cupcakes with your sisters, or going hunting and fishing with your brothers does not make me interested in joining your organization.
I want to know what you ACTUALLY do. No, I don’t mean the partying. I mean the philanthropy events, the socials, and the formals.
Once August rolls around, its inevitable that the fraternities will post their ‘rush’ videos. As they start coming out I can't help but wonder if it was a Go Pro advertisement or a recruitment video. I mean seriously. You taking your Go Pro with you to Mexico and to all the ragers you go to does not substantiate what your organization does. So your basically telling me if I join SigEp I will be able to go to Mexico and travel the world? Because that’s about all I got out of their most recent recruitment video.(Nothing against the men of SigEp) I mean seriously, what you do in your free time has NOTHING to do with your organization. Sure, you put a couple facts of your accomplishments in the beginning, but really? That’s it.
Don’t even get me started on sorority ‘rush’ videos. I am in a sorority. I love Greek life, don’t get me wrong, but honestly, the ‘rush’ videos are horrible. Pictures of your members in a bikini throwing what they know doesn’t exactly represent your organization to its highest values. In fact I am 99% sure that if your founders saw this, they would roll over in their graves. On top of the half naked pictures, you have the awkward laughing and hugging. There is no humanly possible way a person can laugh and smile as much as they do in these videos.
Part of the reason Greek life gets such a negative connotation in society is because of what we, as Greeks, put out there. We get so offended when people assume we are all a bunch of college students who get drunk and slut around all the time, but we aren’t exactly showing them differently. Instead of making these recruitment videos about the parties, and the half naked girls, why not have members talking about why they love their organization. Why not have members reminisce on their favorite memory. Why not have members talk about why they joined their organization. There are SO many other things that we can put into recruitment videos. Imagine putting these things in our videos and attracting people to join our organizations for reasons other than the parties and the cool stuff. That will be the day..
