It's Time To #FreeKesha

How society has wronged her.

We Heart It

If you've been asking yourself where Kesha (styled as Ke$ha) has been in the past few years, you're in for quite the story. In the last year, the artist we've come to know as the wild child, glitter-drenched, party girl of the music industry has been fighting in a bitter court case against her record label, specifically her producer Dr. Luke. Kesha has claimed in her lawsuit that Dr. Luke (real name Lukasz Gottwald) has taken advantage of her throughout her career in a number of ways, including allegedly drugging her, sexually abusing her, and blackmailing her after the fact with threats to her own self, her family, and her career.

Now, after more than a year of legal tussling, Kesha has received her verdict: her request to be released from her contract with Dr. Luke has been denied. Due to a lack of evidence, Kesha is now at a standstill; she can either continue creating music under the record label that Dr. Luke is still employed with, or stop releasing music altogether.

Well, Hollywood isn't having it. Celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Lorde, and Ariana Grande have outspokenly shown their support for Kesha with the hashtag #FreeKesha. Since then, the hashtag has been trending with hundreds of thousands of uses; blowing up Twitter timelines and Facebook feeds. In fact, this tweet from MTV UK using the hashtag has garnered over 50,000 retweets and counting.

This overwhelming support for Kesha from friends and fans brings up the burning question: if Kesha's claims are true, how can we, as a society, insure that all individuals who are abused or threatened by their higher-ups get the justice that they deserve? More so, who gets the final say in telling a victim if they have been raped or not?Instead of punishing these victims, we need to be allies to them. The trauma and abuse that they have suffered is more than difficult for one person to handle alone, often leading to these allegations being put off for months, even years, due to paralyzing fear. It's true that the courts have the official verdict in a case. However, it often also goes without saying that public opinion is the final say. In this case, the majority is more than sympathetic for Kesha.

So now the question remains: what will Kesha do now? The singer is known for her flashy attire, dance-y hits, and larger-than-life personality. Clearly, the bravery and strength that Kesha has embodied during this last year has inspired so many people. Regardless of a verdict, the world stands with Kesha; an artist who has taken on everything that is wrong with society's view of sexual assault. With that, it's time to #FreeKesha.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
