It's Okay To Have A Backup Plan
Diverse Education

We all have to grow up some time, and it's hard. We are constantly reminded from as early as elementary school that we have to grow up and become an adult. After high school, we choose our future profession.

We choose a path, and stick with it. No obstacles, no illusions...just easy.

That's it...right?

Unfortunately, life is not always this simple. Today, it is more common than ever for a college student to change their major. Personally, I have changed my focus twice before deciding on Marketing. We should be encouraged to choose a major that we're happy with in the long run, not just for money. We should be able to wake up in the morning and want to go to work.

One of my professors from this semester wakes up hours before he leaves for work because he is so excited. He says he would pay the college for the privilege of teaching us, (not that he would tell the university that).

Recently, I've been talking to a couple of friends about their backup plans. Both are in different walks of life, but travel similar paths. Neither have one.

Backup plans are okay to have.

Having one doesn't mean being unhappy. Heck, many people find that the current degree they're chasing leaves them unfulfilled.

So, what happens if you don't get into the program of your dreams and have to wait another year before applying? Do you sit around watching TV and basically do nothing? Do you go for another easy degree?

I had a family member who worked his butt off to get into the DPS Academy. Due to many different medical reasons, it wasn't an easy road. It took a few application periods. Currently, he is a State Trooper and happy as a clam. Before he finally got into the academy, he got his Criminal Justice Degree. He didn't just sit around; he was proactive.

If you're about to graduate and you're unhappy with your current path, it's okay to change it. Have a backup plan! Do your backup plan. Nothing stings your parents more than finishing a degree and you not liking it. If this means you have to backtrack a couple of semesters, that's fine. At least you'll be happy!

Backup plans are beneficial for everybody, no matter your walk of life. They're your safety net. Find your safety net because without one, you'll just be free-falling.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
