What do you think of first when you hear the words "best friend"? My mind immediately goes to the one person who is undisputedly my closest friend, the person who I trust unconditionally with everything in my life. A best friend is the first person you want to talk to when you wake up in the morning. It's that person that you always want to include in your plans for the day, because no matter what you are doing or who you are doing it with, you want him or her there with you.
However, a best friend is more than just your closest friend. A best friend is a comfort zone. It's someone you always feel at home with, regardless of all the outside noise. It is not just the person you can call up at any time of day and talk to for hours, it's the person you want to.
Now, what, or who, do you think of first when you hear the words "girlfriend', or "boyfriend"? Are you thinking of that one person? I know you are. If you are in a relationship and you don't think this way about your significant other, you're doing it wrong. If you aren't in a relationship and you don't think this way about the person you want to be with, then I don't think that person is your "THE person". Hey, if you're in the third group and don't want to be in a relationship at all, go you; just live life and be happy.
Obviously, there is nothing wrong with not being with your significant other all the time. On the flip side, there is nothing wrong with having a relationship where you spend all your time together, either. If you enjoy your significant other's company like you enjoy a best friend's company, it is perfectly acceptable for he or she to be that person for you. I feel a healthy relationship is all about happiness, so as long as you are both happy, keep it going just the way it is.
All I'm trying to say is, if you can't FaceTime your girlfriend or boyfriend for five hours and have your dogs meet each other, then who can you do that with?
While I was writing this article I had my one person in mind, my amazing girlfriend. Hey, Hannah. Who came to your mind while reading?
