This is not a debatable issue.
This is not up for a vote.
This is black and white; not grey.
It is October, not the day after Thanksgiving. Therefore, we should not be celebrating Christmas or our other holidays yet.
Celebrate (according to Dictionary.com): to observe (a day) or commemorate (an event) with ceremonies or festivities.
There is no way to slice or dice it; stop celebrating it early. And here's why:
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? My hypothesis is that, since the rapid development of technology has helped our culture become way more interactive and fast-paced, we have lost this ability to be patient and wait. We want what we want and we want it now. But you see, that's the great thing about Christmas; the looking forward to! My parents always made me and my brother wait till 7 am before we came and woke them up on Christmas morning. 7 am! Then I hated it, but now I understand why. The waiting, the sleepless Eve, the longing and thinking about what is wrapped under the tree... it's all part of what makes the morning so magical. And this is just a tiny example compared to the whole season.
But a lot of people nowadays rush into it. Instead of waiting and making it through Thanksgiving, we start decorating and buying. We listen to Christmas music year round. We buy Sugar Cookie or Peppermint Mocha creamer in September. We start budgeting before the bird (on the real though, this one I believe is totally acceptable).
If I sound like I'm serious and possibly violent regarding my views on this particular debate, I mostly am. Yes, this is a joke that people have year round, but beneath the fake smiles and facade is a burning passion that the "others" are the enemy.
So whether you are praising or hating what I am saying, I challenge you to do this Holiday Season: Make yourself wait. Seriously, push yourself a little farther and a little longer. You can do it. Because that first Christmas song, that first Hallmark movie, that first Christmas tree Pillsbury cookie, etc., will all be worth it.
Just trust me. It really does make it the best holiday of the year.
And if you disagree with me, well I'm just sorry but you're wrong. And all those on my side said "Amen!"
